iPhone 5 Exchange contacts not showing up

Friend's iPhone 5. When trying to compose a new message from the exchange account. When you start typing in the "To:" field and names usually pop up automatically, that is not happening. Also not all Exchange contacts are showing up in search. I had to manually go to Groups, then Exchange Global Address List to see the full list. Any ideas here? More for the first issue, GAL contacts need to pop up when typing into the "to:" field as it normally works on smartphones.
