Apple has determined that a very small percentage of iPhone 5 devices may suddenly experience shorter battery life or need to be charged more frequently. The affected iPhone 5 devices were sold between September 2012 and January 2013 and fall within a limited serial number range.

If your iPhone 5 is experiencing these symptoms and meets the eligibility requirements noted below, Apple will replace your iPhone 5 battery, free of charge.
Eligibility

If your iPhone is in working order and exhibits the symptoms noted above, use the serial number checker below to see if it is eligible for this program.

As of August 22, 2014, the replacement process will be available in the U.S. and China. In other countries, it will be available as of August 29, 2014.

I've been experiencing some fun battery life recently, 23%->dead in under a minute. Looks like I'm eligible as well.

I was very pleased to learn I qualify for this, and had the replacement done on Saturday. This will keep me comfortable with using my 5 for at least a few more months, rather than instantly upgrading to a 6. Credit where credit's due - Apple has a solid track record of providing free repairs even out of warranty where they have screwed up. I also had the wrist rest and keyboard on my old white MacBook replaced for free when the computer was more than a year and a half out of warranty after the wrist rest cracked.

Mines not in the affected range but it dies at 22% at times or shuts down :(

Well not too long to go until I upgrade to the 6.

Mine had that problem. I took it in to the apple store and they just replaced it. They checked the logs on it and saw what was happening.

Have you tried calibrating the battery? Let it run down til it dies, and if it wasn't at 0-1%, then turn it back on again and repeat.

Then, once it finally dies at 0-1%, charge it to 100%. I can't say for sure if that will fix the issue, in my case it was actually a firmware/software issue.

Getting wife's iphone 5 fixed under this program. Phone used to die at around 30% battery left and she would charge it 2-3 times a day.

They gave 2 options as they did not have the batteries on hand:
1) They will order the battery, and when battery arrives at store, come back and it will take ~1hr to get it replaced.
2) They will ship the phone for depot repair, and contact us when they receive it back. You can choose for a Loaner phone meanwhile.

What the hell, was this at an Apple Store or a authorized centre? This is unheard of for an Apple Store, if they can't fix it on the spot they swap it with a refurb and off you go.

I've heard that they were trying to do more on-site repairs instead of straight swaps but... maybe they were also out of refurbs. Otherwise they probably would have swapped.

This was at an Apple Store. There were atleast 3-4 more people with the same issue, and they were offering the same to everyone else.

Note that our phone was out of warranty (bought in Sept 2012, when it was released).

My iPhone 5 was also in the recall. I went to the Apple store on Friday and they swapped my phone for a refurb. I am happy. Only bad thing is I had to fully set it up my way again.

Your backup restore didn't work?? There shouldn't be anything that has to be setup again.
