This is pretty sad.

The incremental upgrade from the 3G to the 3GS was ok, because in 2009 it was competing against WinMo6 and BB (only good Android was the G1). In 2011, this is a major fail of a "redesign."

Sure, Siri looks pretty cool, but I hardly used voice control on Android, so meh.

I've taken 16 pictures with my 4 since I got it in July, so meh to the camera.

I am looking forward to iOS5, but that's about it.

no 4G either... nor LTE... wtf is this thing doing on Sprint this late, without the latest tech? I've a feeling Sprint is wasting their time with the "employee's cannot take vacation during this week". I don't think it will be a mad house at the time...

They should use camera body textured plastics or rubberized plastic for the back. Smooth plastics are just meh.

I agree the DX and the bionic are perfect examples of this

the Bionic IS plastic and feels like crap
the DX is rubber coated metal

the phones are nearly the exact same size bt the DX feels so much better in hand

the loser is sprint here not Apple. Apple will still sell millions and make tons of money. They might have been able to gain more marketshare with say a 4.0" screen instead, but they'll do fine. Maybe just not as well. Sprint on the other hand just sunk $20 billion into something they might not make back well enough.

Interesting things:

-Dual core gpu - wish android phones would stop lagging behind in gpu power
-Improved camera - Samsung seems pretty on top of this, although android does need to speed up the app. Quick launch from phone lockscreen would be nice, maybe ICS?

And that's really anything of interest. IOS5 nothing terribly special there. So nope, hasn't been enough in this version to swing me to the iphone. The lack of screen size increase really trumps any of the other benefits. Nexus prime it is!

But graphics aren't really that important. Honestly, Android feels slow because of the lack of hardware acceleration. Give anyone a smooth phone and they'll love it. Look at WM7 phones with the fail Adreno 200 GPU. Remember what this world is driven by right now. Social networking, be it Facebook, Twitter, foursquare, SMS, MMS, group messaging like Whatsapp/BBM, blogging, etc. The gaming aspect is more casual than anything else. Look at the # of people on Farmville and other casual games. Compare that to hardcore gaming like SC2 (though SC2 really got more mainstream than the previous version), Battlefield, etc. The numbers are staggering. You can build a phone that can do great in 3D gaming, but if you can't even do the basic SMS, email, Facebook well, no one cares. This is why there's been such a cry for Android UI improvements, and for the apps to step up in the Android market. We're finally seeing that now.

in terms of in hand feel, it goes something like this

nokia>motorola & HTC tied > sony ericsson > lg > samsung

Even my cheapo Optimus V feels great in hand with rubberized plastic. I didn't like holding the S2 at all at the Samsung Kiosk.

Not the quantum leap the 3g was, unfortunately, but like the 3Gs the 4s will likely setup a killer iphone 5...which will be 18 months behind by the time it launches. 😛

Damn the screen size kills it for me. Didn't care about much other than screen size this go around. Now it's keep my 4 or dabble on Android or wp7

Anybody notice apple.com is down for the count. Was just the store earlier now it seems to be the whole site as of this post.

Boo the only problem with switching to android, I just realized, is that I have to give up my grandfathered unlimited iphone data plan. They make you drop it and get a regular 2GB data plan instead. 🙁

Yeah, Sprint's 3G is atrocious. I am lucky I live in a 4G area because that's the only way I'm able to load web pages in any reasonable length of time.

Fair enough, lets see what ICS can bring to the table in terms of hardware acceleration next week.

Not sure who your carrier is but I'm on ATT and was told the unlimited iphone data plan can be transfered to any smart phone.

so guys, what's the deal?

pick up SGS2 today or wait for this 10/11 announcement from Samsung?

If you don't need a phone right now it never hurts to see what is coming on the 11th, it's not like the Galaxy S2 is going anywhere if you wait.

Just play with a SGSII and tell me it isn't as smooth as a iphone. TW4 is actually well liked and is hardware accelerated. I am sure ICS will help some more in the future, SGSII is very smooth as is.

Ugh, no update for the Touch (oh, I guess you can get it in white now 🙄). I so wish it would be a 4S without the ability to make cellular calls. Yeah, wishful thinking.

Maybe I'm alone in this, but I really don't care about cameras on my cellphone.

Sure they are nice, and I want decent quality, but I'm never really taking action shots where I need to have faster shutter speeds with my phone, doesn't seem like much of a "feature" to me.

I think cameras on phones is important, as it can replace supercompact digicams for when you're out and about and not lugging around a quality dedicated camera.

I see it as though Sprint didn't really have a choice. They have to offer parity, otherwise people won't switch to them if they have to give up the iPhone.

To further complicate things, their unlimited plans is what will entice iPhone users, but will that doom Sprint like it hurt AT&T and Verizon? That's about the only thing they can really offer over them right now, but if selling out for the iPhone kills it (and coupled with them losing money on bringing the iPhone), then Sprint is going to end up really badly off.

I just now went to the ATT website store to buy the SGS2 and it popped up 1 warning saying that the SGS2 requires a data plan, 1 warning that the iphone unlimited data plan was not compatible, and 1 warning that if I switched plans I could not switch back. It also had a message saying 50% of data users use less than 200 mb, and 94% use less than 2 GB. So at least it is nice that they are being upfront and clear about the matter.

I assume the reason why I can't keep the grandfathered plan is because it is only compatible with iphones...

Shens.
Call again and talk to another rep.

AT&T? I switched from a 3GS to an SGS2 and didn't have to give up my unlimited iPhone data plan.
