iPhone 4S: Microphone Randomly Doesn't Work with Calls

A call came in on my phone the other day, I pick it up, and say, "hello." Fairly standard affair... except the other person couldn't actually hear me, and they hung up. They called again, and the same thing happened. Now, this isn't the first time this has happened to me. If I recall, when I was trying to talk to a Comcast service representative, I had the same problem where the person simply couldn't hear me. I fixed it that time by turning on speaker phone.

So, I decided to give that a shot, and when the person called me again, I decided to see if it would work normally, and it didn't. I enabled speaker phone and it worked fine.

Has anyone else had this problem before?

I'm tempted to just go to the Apple Store today and request a replacement phone, because with this problem and the data connection failure issue (which is very annoying, and happens a few times a week), using my phone is more of a headache than anything. My 3GS never gave me any grief, but this phone has been a rather awful experience so far.

Sounds like a trip to the Apple Store is in order.

It happens to me every blue moon or so, and usually calling back fixes it. Like something didn't "click".

My wife had a similar issue, we went to the Apple store and told them the problem and they replaced the phone on the spot.

That's what my friend (the person that called me) told me when I commented about it. That doesn't seem right though. I mean... I owned my 3GS for over two and a half years, and it never exhibited either of the problems that I mentioned in my post.

Although, the last time I went to the Apple Store (for the data problem), they just reinstalled iOS on my phone. Amusingly enough though... after hearing my complaints, the guy asked whether I had AT&T or not.

It happened to me with a 3G and its happened with my 4. I mean, very very rarely. I always assumed it was an AT&T issue and not a hardware issue.

Well, what makes it strange is how it suddenly works when you put your phone on speakerphone. I don't know if anyone else ended up doing it, but at least that "solution" has always worked for me. As a software person, if someone told me that, I'd get this odd feeling that for some reason, the microphone isn't being unmuted when it should be, and enabling speakerphone turns it on.

Although, if that was the case, then I'd expect more people to run into the problem.
