I received my black 16 GB 4S from AT&T today, but the model number on my phone doesn't seem to match up with what I could find on Apple's site. The model # on my phone is MC922LL. These are the model numbers I could find on the Apple Store site:

AT&T iPhone 4S
16 GB Black MC918LL
16 GB White MC920LL
32 GB Black MC919LL
32 GB White MC921LL
64 GB Black MD269LL
64 GB White MD271LL

I'm speculating that this could be the unlocked version that isn't supposed to be sold until November. Has anyone else seen this model number? Google only shows one other link where this model has been mentioned.

I bough mine unlocked at the Apple store in Christiana Mall, they initially said no unlocked phones, then allowed people to purchase up to 2. I bought an unlocked 32gb, but my serial number is MC921LL

The box for my white 16GB 4S states a model number of MD378LL/A?

That's the Sprint model, the model # also depends on the carrier you chose. The ones I listed were only for AT&T.

My SIM also was not provisioned correctly. It wouldn't connect to AT&T after finishing the setup/activation process on the iPhone. I wonder if it's related to the odd model # or just a coincidence.

Unlocked phones are available??????? I went to Apple on 5th Avenue yesterday and they had a TON of iPhone 4s's in stock, except the 16GB White AT&T. :(

Gonna try my luck tonight again.

I was as confused as you are, I went in uflly expecting to have to pay $250 extra cause of ATT's bullshit upgrade timing. However they came out and told us we could buy up to 2 off contract if we wanted.

Here is my proof:
