iPhone 4S / iPad 2 / AppleTV + Personal Hotspot

So... since my iPad2 3G doesn't have the Personal Hotspot functionality I can't connect it to an AppleTV directly to use AirPlay for times where there's no WiFi around (like my grandpa's place). However my iPhone 4S does have this. So both my iPad and AppleTV (which I would buy if it works) could connect to the iPhone. But will they see each other and will it allow me to use AirPlay between the iPad and an AppleTV?

Yes, I know the iPad3 has Personal Hotspot. No idea why Apple won't enable it on the iPad2 when even a iPhone 4 has it...

TIA

Pardon the obvious, but doesn't AirPlay only work over wifi?

AirPlay works over Wi-Fi or an Ethernet connection, or a combination of both. So you can stream music directly from your home network if you’re near an Ethernet port or connect wirelessly if you’re not.

Yes, it does.

If I had an iPad 3 I could enable Personal Hotspot on it and use an AppleTV to connect to it locally. Then I could "throw" stuff on the TV. I wouldn't need a router to create a WiFi network.

My iPad 2 can't do Personal Hotspot, so it can't act as an Access Point / WiFi network.

However my iPhone 4S can. Hence I can connect an AppleTV and my iPad 2 to the iPhone 4S' "Access Point". The question is - will the iPad see the AppleTV hence allow me to use AirPlay?

EDIT: AppleTV is very small. It's easy to carry around when visiting the older part of the family to show pictures and videos. I don't want to carry a router too just to be able to use AirPlay.

I think what he's saying is that he wants to use Airplay between his iPad and ATV without using a Wifi router. So I'm assuming he travels with his ATV & iPad, say to his grandpa's place, and just wants a direct connection to play back stuff from the iPad to the AppleTV.

OP, without jailbreaking, your best bet is just to get a small travel router. Newegg has palm-sized 802.11n cheapies for $20:

Pre-program it with an SSID & password, then pre-program your ATV/iPad/iPhone with the credentials, and then all you have to do is pop that into a power source and you'll have your own private little hotspot wherever you go.

You know...if you wanted to turn this into a fun little project...you could build a little box and put the ATV & Travel Router inside of it, along with one of those compact surge protectors. Run a short Ethernet cable between the ATV & router for direct connection, then run an extension cord out from that bundle. Something like this:

So then you could just show up, plug in one power cable and the HDMI cable and have a Wifi-enabled TV box :awe:

wow, I have zero need for this but I still want it.

While that sounds like a fun little project, I might as well sell my iPad2 and get me an iPad3 😛

Since I don't have an AppleTV yet I can't test this myself... Just want to know if my iPad and an AppleTV will see each other for AirPlay when connected to an iPhone 4S' Personal Hotspot 😉

EDIT: Or I'll just do AirPlay directly from my iPhone, just need to move the stuff around a bit... :hmm:

I domt see why they wouldn't since they're on the same network.

But I still think id bhy a travel router if i was moving it around that much.

why not transfer pictures/media to your ipad2, & buy the HDMI adapter (assuming the TV you will be showing this on has HDMI) and show the pictures that way? Sure it takes a little pre-planning, but how often do you really just swing by the grandparents place? I understand that this won't work if you plan on showing lots of super hi res photos and possibly playing back hi-def videos as well, but you haven't specified, so I'm assuming you wont, and thus, my solution is the best 🙂

Thanks for the dock idea - that could work too (the TV has HDMI). I'd be stuck next to the TV though (I guess it depends on the cable length...).

I recon it will work with the phone's hotspot functionality. Just wondering if someone has tried it before...

Hi just wondering how you got on with this? I am trying to do the same thing but for a different reason, where I live I cannot get a land Internet connection, but I do have a strong 3G signal and an unlimited plan on my iPhone

I can get the ATV to connect to my iPhone hotspot and my iPad to connect to the iPhone at the same time. But I cannot get the iPad to talk to the apple tv. What u think?

The iPhone router is likely not routing Bonjour.

So just to elaborate on this thread and ask an additional question around the same subject..I just got an Apple Tv box and wanted to bring it to our beach house which as no wifi..however i have a iPhone 4S. Will I be able to watch NetFlix through the 3G connection as I have unlimited data and get a good connection in the house. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
