My mom refuses to get a real cell phone plan and she has been on tracfone for years now.

Tracfone has started letting iphones work on their network. I have a jailbroken iphone 4 from Sprint that I haven't used in a year and was going to give it to her. To my knowledge CDMA is what tracfone is on.

Do I need to have sprint unlock it? Or will it work straight up. I know in most cases phones have to be unlocked.

If you follow the link on that page, the page where you actually register the phone, you'll see this disclaimer:

Note: This program will not work with Blackberry or iPhone, nor with Straight Talk, TracFone, Safe Link, NET10 Wireless or Telcel America brand phones.

Unless you don't tell them that it's an iPhone and just register it anyway (like iPhones on PagePlus), maybe it'll work, I don't know.

Forgot to add: answering your question, Sprint's MVNO's BYOSP (bring your own Sprint phone) usually does not need for the phones to be 'unlocked'. The only requirement is that it's a Sprint phone (with the exception of certain models) that is inactive (not tied into a Sprint account).

I saw that on the website. I saw that they are taking iphones on a google search. I also called them up today to confirm and they said yes.

However I trust my anandtech people way more than some person on a 1800 number. I will update this post if I successfully do it.

In this case, I have zero prior knowledge about it and was just reading on that page, so you probably should have trusted them more :D

At any rate, you might as well try, it will either work or not, there's no harm in trying!

Set her up with Ting. You can bring your own sprint phone and it's pay as you go like tracfone
