iPhone 4 (non-S) is getting really hot and burning me...

This is weird. I've never heard of this being an issue...

My iPhone 4 started getting pretty hot after a 5 minute call. I ended the call and placed the phone in my pocket. The phone got hotter, even after the call was ended. I made another quick call, but this time it felt like it was burning my face. I continued the call on speakerphone.

Right now, about 10 minutes later, it's been sitting on the counter maintaining really high heat even after a reset. What the heck is going on? If you hold it on your face, it burns. If you leave it in your pocket for about 30 seconds, it starts to burn...

It's the only phone I have. If I shut it off, I can't call Apple... And the phone is long out of warranty, so calling Apple wouldn't really help anyways. After submitting this post, I'll be shutting the phone off in hopes that it'd cool off. I'd pull the battery, but it's integrated.

So does anyone have a clue as to what's going on? Will it persist? My phone is not jailbroken and it's freshly updated... Never had a problem before.

Some app has probably gone haywire, and is maxing out the CPU.

Unfortunately, apple hides all the multitasking info, so there's no way to find out what is causing the problem (unless you have a jailbreak and one of the task manager apps).

Reboot it, and with a bit of luck it should sort itself out. Or, if you don't want to reboot, use the double-tap task bar and kill everything on it.

Yea either try kill all the apps or it is the battery that is having problems. Check with an Apple store if it is really "hot", they'll be more than willingly replace it if there is a battery issue.

PS - plz don't put it beside your face if it is that "hot", u dunno if it is gonna explode =_="

It cooled off after I shut it off (duh, but you never know). Turned it back on, no apps running, still getting hot...

Apple store on Tuesday. I got it launch day, so it's far out of warranty. We'll see what happens...

Turn it off and keep it off; you have a textbook battery failure, and if you keep using the device you may very well blow out the battery entirely. The processors on the iPhone can get warm, but what you're describing sounds like it's well beyond the watt or two the processors can pull.

This. You don't want to mess with lithium batteries once they start going haywire. Take it to an Apple and get it fixed asap.

Good call on CPU utilization and possible battery failure.

It *definitely* sounds like the battery has gone bad and is in the state of ready to.... blow up. j/k. Due to extreme heat or melt down it could also damage the rest of the circuits in the device. Stop using it. Turn it off and take it to Apple for service ASAP.

It's out of warranty... I hope it's not outrageously expensive to repair, like everything else Apple.

I won't have a chance to go until Tuesday.
