iPhone 4 does not work with my old cables

Leros

I have several 6' long 3rd party iPhone cables that I used to sync and charge my iPhone 3G. With my iPhone 4, Windows sees an iPhone but fails to install the driver. If I used the cable that came with the iPhone 4, then it works just fine.

What gives?

are you using a bumper?

nope.

With the old cable, the phone charges off the charger fine. Windows even recognizes it as an iPhone, but it says it can't install the driver. The old cable still works fine with my 3G. The new iPhone is recognized by my computer if I used the new cable.

My old 3rd party cables work fine with my iPhone 4, in fact one of the cables I use is a good 6-7 years old from a very old iPod.

OK, so... new cable all is good.
Old cable, charges, but wont sync?
Have you considered getting new cables from MonoPrice? They are like $3/piece there.

I fear I don't have a solution, it could be any number of things. Have you tried moving the old cable to a different USB port?

$0.79 at meritline

The only problem one might see (from a compatibility reason) would be going from a 1G to the 3G/GS/4G.

That is because the 1G could charge via USB/FireWire while FireWire changing was eliminated in the later versions.

Other than that, they are pin compatible.

Your cable may be damaged or the adapter collected dirt which needs to be removed.

The cables I have I bought from Monoprice about 3-4 months ago. I have three of them.

They all sync and charge my 3g. They charge my 4, but won't sync it.

This. OP has PEBKAC problem

I had three cables I used interchangeably with two different computers. One computer I used for pulling pictures off and the other I used for syncing with iTunes. The first computer did not have iTunes installed. This all worked fine with my 3G.

When I got my iPhone 4, these were the steps I took.

1) Tried old cable 1 and old cable 2 on PC without iTunes. Computer saw it as an iPhone, but failed to install the driver.

2) Tried old cable 3 on the computer with iTunes. Same thing. Saw it as an iPhone, but failed to install the driver. iTunes did not see the phone.

3) Tried the new cable on computer without iTunes. It installed the drivers and worked fine.

4) Tried the new cable on compute with iTunes. It installed the drivers and synced with iTunes fine.

5) Went back with old iPhone 3G and tried old cables with both computers. All three cables worked fine with my old iPhone 3G.

It doesn't make sense to me either. Isn't the iPhone to USB cable just a USB cable? Are the other pins even hooked up to anything?
