iPhone 4 broken sleep/wake button

I have an iPhone 4 who's sleep/wake button has given up the ghost. The apple store won't replace it because it's 2 months out of warranty.

I have not taken my phone apart (the store did to see if anything was jammed under the button), but I guess the sleep/wake button is part of the main PCB assembly? I've looked online for repair options, but it seems like the home button is the only button that is available?

Has anybody gone through fixing a broken sleep/wake button? I would jail break it and use something like quicklock, but I connect it to my work's exchange server - and we had to agree not to jailbreak the phones as a condition of allowing us to connect.

Mine also just recently bit the bullet. Just holding out long enough for the next release. Might check missionrepair I bet they could fix it some how.

happened to mine as well, but i was able to get it replaced despite it being out of warranty.

How far out of warranty was it and where did you get it replaced?

I've looked on iFixit and found some info, but it doesn't look like they sell the switch itself 🙁

Guide to replace the button, but not the actual switch

"Cable" that may or may not contain the switch? I'll have to ask iFixit if it does.

I went to my local Apple store (Victor NY) and the phone was about 6 weeks out of warranty. I had no problems getting it replaced. I never had to ask, but was fully prepared to do so.

How do you design this button to fail as soon as warranty ends?

How many times do you press the button in a year? Figure that out and design the switch to last only that long 😀

Anyway, I found out from ifixit that the power cable I linked above does contain the actual switch. I ordered a new cable and a new button, and hopefully that will solve my problem...

The button on my sister-in-law's 3gs apparently fell out at some point last year. I pointed this out to her when I had to use her phone to make a call.

She had no idea it ever had a button and, thus, she never missed having it (we wondered why she did a lot of "butt calling" (actually "purse calling") - well, we answered that question).

She lived without it for a few more months until she got an iP4 last December.

LOL.
