iPhone 3GS on T-Mobile?

5.1.1

I've been having fun with this one all day. Yes!

Jailbroke.
Changed APN with unlockit.co.nz

From what I'm seeing is that I should have access to something like "Cellular Network Data Plan" options, but all it gives me is the "on/off".
Seems like there's a package tool thing I should be using from Cydia? I'm not sure what that may be though...

Came across seeing that because of different spectrum they were created to run on, that I should disable 3G to work over Edge, but that's nada.
Although I do see T-Mobile has been in works of supporting that specific spectrum. That's cool & all, but am unsure if my area is within that change or not, yet.

I'm able to access stuff via wifi, but need it to work over the T-Mobile network.

Trying to think what else I did & am missing. Hmm...

Ideas? Been hitting Google hard all day.

To get the network settings you need to install "tetherme." It is not free, but can be if you add the right sources in cydia... xsellize / sinfuliphone repo. You can also try searching cydia for "apn editing" it is free, but I have never used it.

You don't need to do this to get data working though. Using unlock.co.nz should get you working data if you set it up right and turn on cellular data in the settings. I noticed when doing the custom apn thing on the website it lists t-mobile twice. It goes tmobile, att, and tmobile. Install the 2nd one and click create profile. On the next popup it should say under description "changes apn to epc.tmobile.com". If it says something else, it is probably the wrong one. You might also want to remove the old apn settings from unlock.co.nz from settings.

Are you on t-mobile or t-mobile prepaid or one of their other sellers?

I haven't messed with unlocking iPhones for a while but it used to be that all 3GS were unlockable by flashing the baseband to the iPad baseband and then using ultrasnow.
Is that not the case anymore ??
There was a brief period all iPhones were unlockable with the SAM unlock but Apple closed that lopphole pretty quick.

Yea. I tried both T-Mobile APN's.

Waiting on customer to bring her sim back in so I can try with the tetherme stuff & such.
Will try to remember to ask her those last question when she comes in.

Alright. Customer brought sim back in. Knew I'm missing something.

It's not picking up a phone number with the T-Mobile sim card in.

Trying to look into that but google isn't displaying anything near relevant.

Well then that probably means the iPhone isn't even carrier unlocked? It's probably still locked to ATT.

Also, in the title you wrote iPhone 3G, I think it is a 3GS. The 3G can not be updated to ios 5.1.1.

Yea. That's what we had come to conclusion on. She had said she had gotten it unlocked from the carriers themselves or whatever, since they began officially supporting that. But I guess not. Will follow up with her on that soon as she stops back in.

Yea. Searches keep runnin' me in circles & I keep hitting my head against the wall trying to figure out how to unlock this damn thing.

What baseband is it on? Settings -> general -> about, modem firmware

If its updated to the latest, I don't think you are going to find an unlock. Get it carrier unlocked. There are gevey sims that unlock the newer iOS versions, but those only are advertised for the iphone 4/4s, not sure if theres one for the 3gs.
According to this, it does but its kind of old, theres a new gevey sim out now http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1134339

I would just post your question on the macrumors forums, they know more about it there.
