How did you manage to get a locked iPhone 3G without ATT's two year contract?

I have an XP system, the JB instructions I found on iclarified seem to say that I will be upgraded to 2.28 firmware. I do not know what software to use or which ipsw file to use or if I need one.

Do I use quickpwn 2.2, but instead of having the 2.2 ipsw firmware like the tutorial states, I would have another lower level firmware on the desktop folder. My firmware is 2.08, do I have to find a 2.08 ipsw file or can I use a 2.1 file which would be an upgrade but still not the 2.2 ipsw?
1) Find the 2.1 firmware, update your phone to that. This will update your baseband to the latest (and so far last) unlockable version.
2) Find PwnageTool 2.2.1 (you'll need a Mac to run this) and firmware 2.2. Use PwnageTool to write a customized firmware based on 2.2 that strips 2.2's baseband update (since this baseband is not unlockable at this time).
3) Update your phone to firmware 2.2 using your customized firmware. At this point your OS will be up to date, and jailbroken.
4) Tomorrow: Unlock your phone with the new unlocking tool.

Ok , I did the update to the 2.1 firmware and it went ok.

I do not have a mac.

Can I just use quickpwn 2.2-1 tool on the 2.1 firmware to jailbreak it?

The iclaified tutorial uses 2.2 ipsw but says to browse to the version I currently have, which is the 2.1. there is also a message in quickpwn that says it will not upgrade my firmware and it works with firmware ver including 2.1. I was going to use that but will wait to do any changes till I am 100% sure.

I am very grateful for your help.

You would need to have access to a Mac to use PwnageTool; you need to strip the baseband update from 2.2 before you run the update on the phone, and PwnageTool is the only way to create a stripped firmware file. QuickPWN is for after-the-fact jailbreaking, which is only useful for 2G iPhones or people who only need the jailbreak.

Although if what nace says is true, this may all be moot soon.

I'm still using my late 2008 macbook and with the issues with jailbreaking to 2.2 from stock, I'm thinking i might have to jailbreak my iphone 3g with my desktop PC first, can I jailbreak with my PC and then unlock with my macbool?

You'll have to wait until it's released to see. I'd imagine it's just an application that runs on the phone after you jailbreak it (so no computer required once you're jailbroken), but I can't make any promises.

That's like driving a tank on the freeway, you're going nowhere fast.
