I am wanting to buy an iPhone on craigslist and found a deal. A real slickdeal. The iPhone is NIB though. So will I have to somehow go through AT&T still? I have Edge Wireless and while they may be AT&T, I am not wanting their iPhone plans. One of their plans is way more expensive than what I pay for 3 phones on one line right now! (And we have reasonable minutes, just no data which I don't mind) So.. Yeah, can I use this phone on my service when I open it up fresh or do I have to get a contract? Really do not want a contract. :'(

the iphone plan must be used with the new 3g iphones if you are going at&t. the plan is specific to the iphone and i am pretty sure sure won't be able to bypass it.

o_O You sure? Does AT&T automatically know if I am using a iPhone or not, if I just slip in my simcard? I plan to jailbreak the phone, if that matters.

Yes, they know. Now, will they say anything to you or block it? No idea. But be assured, they know exactly what phone you slip your sim into.

That... is bullshit. :'(

Wait, what about the people who buy the iPhone at the store for 500$? (Cleared contract etc)

What about the people WHO CANCELED their contract?

The phones are still locked to AT&T's network so if you wanna do it legit, you do it through AT&T and use an iPhone plan. Apple and AT&T inked an exclusivity deal for 'x' amount of years so they're not offering any unlocks.

You can jailbreak the 3G iPhone and install unofficial apps, but the community hasn't worked out unlocking yet.

not sure man. afaik i don't think the 3g phone can be unlocked like the first gen phone so a carrier besides at&t shouldn't be able to carry a 3g phone for service. again, i'm not sure, but with a phone like that, i'd just stick to at&t and keep whatever support you get with it.

Well, it's basically a deal-breaker for me. We can't pay for their plans. Both my parents, yes I am a youngin' going to college, do not have jobs anymore so we lost like... A LOT OF INCOME. The 80$ we pay already for cellphones(3 lines) is already like, "ZOMGZ HUGE" to my parents. So.. Yeah, really... Tackin' on the iPhone plan ain't something that is going to happen.

All well, no iPhone for me... I guess I'll go get another 24" monitor or something.

Yep, was about to suggest the same. $229 for an 8gb touch is a great deal.

Yeah but the iPod touch doesn't have GPS :( I know that doesn't matter to you but to me that is an awesome cool factor. :'(

Also, I want a new phone damn-it. I have a motorola v190, it's just a phone! It's clunky and blah-blah-blah... I want an iPhone.

Blaahhhhh...

So, if the iPhone plans are too much, where is the 400-600 going to come from for a 24 inch monitor going to come from? Or even the initial cost of the phone for that matter?

Sorry if that's asking too much, this just doesn't sound like something that should even be considered...

400-600 is way easier to lay out than $2,000. -_-

You're right. It is. I shouldn't have said anything and I apologize. Your finances are none of my business.

400 euro is kinda like A LOT! O_O

That's like 800$ here. I rather pay for the f-ing contract for a few months.

Jailbreak it and put it on prepaid, and just add on the medianet for 20$ and put 25$ on every month and rebuy the medianet pkg. It's some work but you'll have an iPhone off contract. Could also port your number in.

You can't do that I think? It only allows for their certain plans.

It's rather pointless though, isn't it? o_O Why would... Idk, it just seems I would use the OTHER AT&T plans because then I wouldn't have to pay off my contract.

I currently have Edge Wireless and I am just added as a third line on the plan for only 10$/month. My parents are not willing to pay, 70$ for a month for an iPhone plan...(Nor am I willing to let them) So, I was wondering if I could just shell out some money for a 3G iPhone (off craigslist) and then pop in my SIM card from my motorola v190 and bam I got service... Will it work? Anyone done it?
