ok I understand A2DP but I wonder why not MMS?

Yea, not sure about that one as well. A2DP could require the updated BT chip in the iPhone 3G, but as far as I know MMS is software (I think, maybe there is something deeper related to its connection to the network)

The "official" Anandtech iPhone OS 3.0 thread is here in the Apple forum:
http://forums.anandtech.com/me...=2285315&enterthread=y

And then the bits that I thought were interesting:
1. They are enabling turn-by-turn navigation for GPS's (ie. "please turn right at the next stoplight"). This will make the GPS on the iPhone much more useful.
2. They added in cut 'n paste - works with menus off of the "magnifying glass" mechanism. Finally.
3. Added in A2DP stereo bluetooth support.
4. They added in MMS support. Works like SMS's. Another finally.
5. They are enabling landscape keyboard use in all applications. This will be really handy.
6. They are enabling better control of 3rd party accessories from within the iPhone software. Things like FM transmitters, and then things like blood sugar monitors and blood pressure monitors. The iPhone/iPod Touch as a medical device... ok.
7. They are enabling better "push" support. Push is when Apple's servers tell your phone something without you initiating it. They will allow push IM's for IM clients like MSN Messenger and AIM.
8. Support for voice memos.
9. Improvements to several baseline apps - stocks (adding news), calendar (supports CalDAV and .ics).
10. Adds in universal search app called "Spotlight" to search stuff on the phone.

$10 for iPod Touch people, free for iPhone users.
No MMS or A2DP for 1st Gen iPhone users - only 3G iPhone users.
Available this summer.

What they are not doing:
1. No backgrounding of apps - they say it eats battery life. And, since I use apps that allow backgrounding of stuff on my iPhone, I can say that they are correct. But still I like the option of choosing what I want to do with my phone. If I want to drain my battery in a couple of hours to get instant IMs... that should be my choice, not Apple's.

hmm

11:28AM So... just wait until June everyone! "So Scott and I would like to thank you, we look forward to the amazing things devs will do. Thank you very much."

11:27AM "What about the rest of us? iPhone OS 3.0 will be available this Summer. A free update to all of our iPhone 3G customers. And it works on the original iPhone. Now the hardware has changed between these two devices. For instance, A2DP and MMS won't be available on the iPhone 1st gen. It's also available for the iPod touch... for $9.95."

Darnit :-\ guess I need to upgrade!

Talked to a buddy of mine. He thinks that Apple didn't use a cell chip that supports binary objects and they are required for MMS

Interesting. I assume then that EDGE on the 1st gen phone uses a separate chip then?

Q: Is there a physical hardware problem on the first-gen iPhone that prevents it from doing MMS.
A: It?s a different radio, so it is a physical issue.

2G iPod touch to have Bluetooth capability unlocked by iPhone OS 3.0

Looks like that Bluetooth chip in the iPod touch 2G we've always thought was for Nike+ suddenly got a lot more useful: Apple's Greg Joswiak said that Bluetooth can be "unlocked" on the device during the iPhone OS 3.0 Q&A session. That's two years of rumors put to rest, right there, and a solid move, seeing as three of the major 3.0 features are A2DP, wireless accessory control and peer-to-peer connections over Bluetooth. Any touch owners feeling more inclined to drop the $9.95 now?

Hot damn, landscape in every app! That's one of my biggest wtfs with the iphone. It has the tilt mechanism, but wasn't usable in many of the areas I'd expect it in.
