Hi Everybody,

I'm having troubles with my network. My little bro's PC has Win98 OS and my PC is Win2k OS. When I go on the network I can get into his PC and look at his files, but when he tries to get on mine it gives a password protocol that I never even set. I read the line and its end was NomisST/IPC$ that is what my Bro's Comp is trying to get to. I looked online at this website http://samba.linuxbe.org/en/samba/learn/ipc.html but I wasn't sure if it was good since it looks like the commands are for linux. If anyone knows how I can get this problem fixed please help me out. I really should figure it out myself, but I have midterms next week and I can't really do anything, but study. Anyways please help out. Thanks.

IPC$ is basically (And forgive my non-technical definition here) a line to your PC - it's used for browsing shares and such. Just like if you use explorer to browse your hard drive, IPC$ is used to browse networks (It does other stuff as well) You can think of it basically in the same thought as you sharing your C Drive, a folder, etc - Your computer shares its network information as IPC$. Your brother doesn't have security rights to it. Windows 98 is wide open, so of course you aren't going to have a problem browsing his computer. Basically anyone (You *ARE* behind a firewall, right? right?) could come and see his computer.

You should create your brother a User ID on your PC that is identical to the one he uses to "log in" to Win98. I might be mistaken, because it's been a long time since I"ve used 98, but I think with networking and sharing enabled, 98 requires a User ID. Just create that ID on your box and make the passwords the same. I think that will clear up your problems. If not, it will get you on the right path at least, and we can push you along further as you update us.

Thats the solution.

Have him log on to his 98 PC with a username and password

Create a user on your 2k machine with that username and password.
