iPaq problem...

I have a very weird problem with my iPaq 3635... Whenever I put the CF sleeve on, the screen becomes horribly inaccurate... Even if I hold the pen still on the screen, the iPaq thinks it's jumping around... But as soon as I take the sleeve off, it's perfectly accurate again... Anyone has any idea why this is? It's becoming very annoying...

The early-mid 3600 series had a flaw with their screens. There was an unreliable connection between the screen and the video cable. This would cause the screen to distort whenever pressue was unevenly applied to the unit (the sleeve could cause this). If you go over to Brighthand and do a search, you can find some info on this. The only ways to fix this are

1. Send it to Compaq. If it's still under warranty, it won't cost you anything.
2. If it's not or you don't want to send it in, take a TORX screwdriver and evenly tighten all the screws in the back. Sometime this can fix the problem, but it didn't for me (the same thing happened to my 3650). Hope this helps.

BINGO!!!

That was it... I just did a quick test to check... I press on one side of the iPaq, and the screen immediately becomes inaccurate... but as soon as I release the pressure everything is fine again... This also explains why the CF sleeve causes this even without a CF card inserted...

Thanks a TON vetteguy!!! I have been wondering why this is for a LONG time...

Now I need to find where I can get a TORX screwdriver...

No problem. Sears has TORX screwdrivers, I think it might be a #6, but just take your iPAQ with you.

How much should I tighten the screws? should I tighten them all the way?

Don't tighten them too much. Like I said, it didn't work for me, but you might try tightening all a little, and seeing what happens, then a little more. It's kind of touch-and-go. Sorry I don't have any better formula for you! Or, you could do one screw, check the screen, then move to the next one.

Actually I was just thinking, maybe I can slip something thick (like a piece of paper folded together) between the iPaq and the sleeve to make the pressure more even.... dont know if it'll work but it's worth a try... I'm going to do it tonight when I get home from work since I dont have my sleeve with my right now...

But man it's such a relief now that I know exactly what the problem is... :D

Glad to be of help! And even if your iPAQ is out of warranty, I'd still give Compaq a call. They've been known to be generous. :)

It worked! :D

I put a folded piece of paper between the iPaq and CF sleeve on one side, and now the screen is perfectly accurate with the sleeve on!
