iPAQ poised to beat Palm

I own both platforms (iPaq and Visor), and I can honestly say that the PalmOS does have its strong points. However, it hasn't evolved over time and that's going to kill it off (imho).

As a recent convert, my observations:

PocketPC is MUCH more imposing to a neophyte. Very little is obvious.
It is not obvious how ActiveSync works. It is not obvious how to
indicate where your files should be stored. It is not obvious how to
even find certain files.

PocketPC battery life is much reduced relative to a Palm device.

That said, once you get over the hump, the PocketPC is much more
fun, much more flexible, much more useful. Once you start to understand
the PocketPC, you won't go back...But you've got to get people over
that hump. People not interested in computers are not likely to be
fast to embrace PocketPC.

And I still haven't figured out how to let two people with their
own PocketPCs share a single desktop (without logging in as different
users) without clobbering one another's data...whereas that's intuitive
and trivial with Palm.

But the truth is out there: Palm is on the decline, WinCE is going
to win in the longterm, unless Palm does a MAJOR revamp on both the
OS and on the hardware (sorry, those sorry lowres displays and 2-8mb
of memory just aren't cutting it anymore).

Very well stated, Kwad. The PocketPC is nowhere near as intuative as the PalmOS. It has a much steeper learning curve. However, I think someone who has never used the PalmOS would find it much easier to pick up.

It was very easy for me to use. I never went to Palm b/c they just didn't interest me. I went from a WinCE2.11 device to WinCE2.12 to WinCE3.0 (PocketPC)

>>>ipaq ipaq ipaq ipaq ipaq ipaq ipaq ipaq ipaq ipaq ipaq ipaq ipaq !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!<<<

That says a lot . . . but probably the iPaq battery would have died on about the 4th or 5th iteration.

That still is the big difference . . . business users love Palms because they have enough legs for several days . . . Pocket PCs die after several hours.

Why can't they get smart and use detachable Li-Ion battery modules like cell phones do? That could make the difference.

I still say that if the PalmOS does what you need (contacts, calendar, notes, etc...), then it's the better option.
But if you crave the added features of the PocketPC (mediaplayer, Excel, Word, ect...), then it's the better option.

Incidentally, if you get the PCMCIA sleeve, then you get a second
battery for your iPaq as well...Double the running time. But the
sleeve costs $100 or more and makes the iPaq fairly large...

I think the main advantages to the PCMCIA sleeve are:

1) Can use the PCMCIA cards you already purchased for your laptop;
no need to spend another hundred bucks on a compactflash NIC and
modem
2) You can use other cards like microdrives, although I read that
these are incredible battery life hogs
3) You get the extra battery built into the PCMCIA sleeve
4) If you get the dual slot PCMCIA sleeve, then you can use both
modem/NIC AND a compactflash card...so you can store directly
onto the card.

What's the deal on the solar power pack? Don't know about that one...
How much, how big, how fast?

Bah...That charger in the electric-fuel link is some sort of
chemical pack that only works three times before you toss it and
buy another. At $10-20 per pop, that's definitely NOT a hot deal...

It wasn't clearly stated on their site, but isn't it rechargeable? They mention something about using oxygen to recharge.

I got a visor deluxe, while the palmOS is much more streamlined, it is very limited, and I don't like the graphiti at all. I am probably going to get a Ipaq too, but those Linux palms are really cool too;)
