Hi all I am new here as far as postings goes. My main question is about the Comapq Ipaq Pocket PC H3650. I was wondering if it is a good PDA to get .... I am not a big fan of the other PDA's out there with the palm OS ( no offence to any one) so looking for the Windows plat form I want somethign that will play all the games for the pocket PC and also be able to play mp3 and videos. The Hp jornda 548 and the casio e-125 & the casio EM500 are the other choices ... I would like to see as many people as possible elaborate on this if possible.

Thanks

It's supposedly the best overall of all the CE machines.

I have my own question. Is it true these guys only have a two hour battery life? That's what arstechnica says.

Here
Here
And do a "Search" for ipaq.

By the way, outsquare, I think that is a typo because I think NFS4 told me that his runs for about 11-12 hours on one battery awhile back when he first got it. I can't remember for sure though.

Well, in the article, the reviewer made a reference to how you can't use it all the way through a coast to coast flight, which is much less than 12 hours. I've been looking at CE machines and I've been thinking how it'd be nice to have one as a portable photo album. If the battery life really was 12 hours, the itch to buy one would be stronger, but two hours would be more or less useless to me.

If youre going for photos and movies and the like, I highly suggest the EM-500. It has the best screen out of any pda, palm or pocket pc.

First, it doesn't use conventional batteries, and second I'd be VERY surprised if it lasted anywhere near 12 hours on a single charge even though it's supposed to, but you'd have to ask NFS4. I doubt it'd last half that long playing Quake or MP3 though.

Depends on what you use it for.

NFS4?

Yeah, 12 hours does sound excessive (but I wouldn't complain!) but 2 hours sounds way too little! Heh, I'd have to get 3-4 batteries that I could cycle between if it's life was only 2 hours! Heck, it takes like 3 friggin hours to charge!

I was given my iPAQ to me from my dad. It was too difficult for him to use so he sent it to me to "learn" how to use. These are amazing because they can do so so so much. They all come with the standards (which rock!)m Excel, Word, Streets, IE, Reader, theyre color, MP3, Mpeg and CF expandability. I think its really cool to have all these apps but its a bit overkill for me. PPC is really built for tech savvy geeks with too much free time while palm is for regular folks who just need their info handy (ME!!!)

iPAQ-
Pro:
-Readable outdoor
-Expansion sleeves
-206mhz

Con:
-Some problems on earlier models (which have supposedly been fixed)
-sidelight too bright (lights up the dude next to you on a plane)
-too sylish (instantly identifies you as a geek)
-With sleeve its bigger than all the rest
-Cant press 2 buttons at once (so mario on nintendo emulator sucks)
-10hr battery (i was screwed when i ran out of juice on a biz trip)
-Cases suck (i carry mine w/o a case because its too big with one)
-12bit screen (i dont care but for some reason some people NEED to have 16bit even on a PDA. If youre one of "those" then get a Casio)

The battery is built in so you can't change it.

emonkey, so the battery life is 10 hours?

OuterSquare, d'oh! So does that mean I'd have to buy 3-4 iPAQs for one trip? <drool>

;)

10 hrs...score!

id say 10 hrs if you use backlighting lightly. i actually have all these simpsons episodes compressed to 7MB each (so i can fit about 6 on a 48MB CF card. thats 2hrs!!!) and i can get about 6hrs of viewing on a charge. thats w medium backlighting and the CF sleeve in there.

-
the iPaq doesnt have a removeable battery so yes, you do have to bring a charger. a HUGE negative for me on the PPC. Biz trips are usually around 3-4 days so a battery should last at least that. on a trip of mine it drained down and by the time i got it charged again the thing reset itself...

-
dial up works with a CF modem (or PCMCIA. depending on what sleeve you have) and uses your regular ISP. i tried this and found it way way way too slow. my opinion of course, but it wasnt what i needed so i returned the modem. personally, i like the old palm Vx and modem since all i get is mail and log off. much simpler (for me))
