1. Get an iPAQ

2. I wouldn't use a PDA as a phone. It's just not right. Keep those two things separate.

What do you want to use it for? What is your budget?
I have a handspring neo and love it and wouldn't cosider anything else at this point in time. why? (and these are just my reasons for my situations)
1. cheap. $140, I realize anything of this nature that is going to live in my pants pocket has got to be considered disposable. Its only a matter of time before something smacks it at the perfect spot to do some damage.
2. I don't need multimedia. Sorry. If I wanted to watch a movie, I'll do it in front of a tv. I'm not going to go sit on the couch and watch something on a pda. AKA doesn't fit into my lifestyle. Same with mp3s. The time that I most listen to headphones and a walkman is when mowing the lawn and I certainly don't want to use $200+ device for that.
3. batteries. Sure you haev rechargable batteries but I more often than not fall asleep reading a book on my pda than get out of bed and take the thing back downstairs. Now if the rechargable batteries were quickly replacable without losing data, then I wouldn't care. (I recently went on a weeklong trip that I didn't have longterm (longer than an hour) access to an outlet to plug one in to charge it. I just wish my pda had the ability to charge my AAA NiMH batteries but you can't have everything.
4. for me, the battery drain outlived the color screens usefullness (it would be nice to have)
5. I can't think of any task that I would be performing that would require multitasking. The slowest prorgam to load on my pda is quicksheet with a large spreadsheet in it but that is only taking 2 seconds so I'm willing to live with that for the couple times that I need to quickly look up something.

I'm not discouraging the ipaq but just pointing out that for many people it is overkill or its simply being used as a toy. I quit carrying my laptop on my business trips in favor of my pda. The only catch is finding an IR printer to print with but then again, I rarely need to print thigns in the field.

Thanks for the replies.

Really it shouldn't be this big of a deal. Work is paying for it so I can choose what I want. Deal is I don't know. I know I'd use the basics, but the more advanced things I might not, yet don't want to be hemmed in, I guess the computer world has taught me to be able to 'upgrade'; or at least buy modular systems that can change out components.

czar has the right idea that I forgot. Play with both not only for features but comfort.
And the last thing is: what do some of your coworkers have? If you can simply beam files back and forth between two palms or two ppc, it makes life easier. There is a program for the palm that will allow this crossplatform beaming for not only those two OSes but also I believe linux based pdas.
