Ipaq 3130 - Cant get it to connect via serial and ActiveSync?

Ive been using my ipaq with the serial sync cable for some time now with an Asus CUSI-FX with no probs.
Last week i changed the mobo over to an Intel i815EP chipset based motherboard - Chaintech 6OJA3.
With this motherboard i can setup a Terminal connection between the PocketPC and Win2K's Hyperterminal no problem, but i cannot get Activesync (latest) to establish a connection?
The default COM1 & 2 settings are the same as the CUSI-FX and so is the state of the OS install - SP2, latest Intel .inf etc.

Have i got a duff motherboard? 🙁

Any ideas be much appreciated,
