I'm planning to buy one of them when I travel to US next month. THe Eee 1001P is $ 280.00, and the iPad $499.00 at least. I usually read more than I write during classes and I have wifi available during class. I'll probably buy the Eee, but wich do you think suits this task best?

Acconding to this weeks ep of TWiT it's possible to use the iPad as a student pc but not advisable given the lack of multi tasking and the crappy keyboard at a minimum you'd need a blue tooth keyboard. Then just hope you don't need flash

The Eee 1001p is a much better option if you're going to be using this to take notes in class. Regardless if you read more than write, if you want to do any serious writing during class, the EeePC is going to be so much better.

EEEPC is far better. The iPad is for playing around with, if you actually need to do something with it besides fool around you'll need a real computer.

go with asus i don't believe ipad has much to offer for student like any educational apps except for ibook app.
and asus has more to offer than what ipad to offer
good luck
