Looks like Verizon is getting the iPad but it's not CDMA. Various places are reporting that the Verizon iPad is just an iPad but connected via a Wifi mobile hotspot device. I think this still adds fuel to the fire though. Considering Qualcomm has a GSM/CDMA capable chip, a CDMA capable iPhone and iPad can't be too far off.

It may even be a better option than the 3G iPad, for multiple reasons:

1. 3G coverage is through Verizon, which for some people is superior to AT&T.
2. The MiFi can be used for other devices as well, like netbooks, without needing to jailbreak the iPad in order to enable tethering.
3. (not sure on this one) If you already have a WiFi iPad but you decide you want mobile data after all, you can add it. But I don't know if Verizon will give you the same deal on a MiFi and associated plan unless you buy the iPad at the same time through them.

EDIT: Strike that last one. You can only get the $20/mo deal if you buy the iPad + MiFi bundle. And I'm also wondering if you have to continuously pay for the service in order to keep it. One of the best things about the iPad is that you can cancel and resume the 3G plan whenever you want. The MiFi with the iPad may be no-contract (no ETF if you cancel), but I wonder if they'd let you get the same $20/mo if you canceled and tried to restart later.

This was available months ago. It's called tethering and it's free.

$20 a month for 1gb data. lol.

No it wasn't, this is the first Apple branded product sold by Verizon, granted, it was possible to do before, but the collaboration between Apple & Verizon is brand spanking new, and suggests that the rumors of a Verizon iPhone are accurate.

It was likely done to send a message that the Verizon iPhone is real and going to happen (as well as make money for both companies in the interim)

1. Tethering is not free as far as the carriers are concerned. It ought to be, and it's easy enough to do it for free anyway, but it normally costs extra to enable.
2. The big deal here is the symbolism of Verizon selling iPads that work on their network. It shows real collaboration between Apple and Verizon, not just rumors.
3. The price of the MiFi plan with the iPad is much, much cheaper than what it would cost to get a separate MiFi plan.

If you have to carry around another device along with the ipad to get the internet and you have to pay, it's automatic fail.

Verizon may get the iphone next year but this ipad collaboration is a failure.

How many here pay for tethering. Show of hands please.

Quite a few posters have a MiFi or similar device, they sell very well. I run into folks I would never expect to have one that do use one rather heavily.

The average person (and average people are buying the iPad by the pallet load) doesn't hack their phone to tether, because they don't know how, and it violates the TOS on their cell phone contract. When I explain what I've done to my phone, the first thing they ask is if it's illegal, they don't understand the difference between violating TOS and breaking the law.

Let's see, the arguably best carrier in the US selling the most popular consumer device ever with a portable WiFi point you can tether anything to at a discount is fail?

There are a ton of loyal Verizon customers that'll eat this up, and the holidays are coming, think massive sales.

I'm not trolling. I really think this is going to be a failure. I repeated myself couple times now so this will be my last input.

Pliablemoose, I think Apple is going to sell gazillion iPads this Christmas season. It won't be because of it being available on Verizon with MiFi.

Agreed, but now Verizon has a piece of the pie, and it shows a collaboration between Apple & Verizon, it's a signal to the rest of the industry and consumers of more to come.

We'll see some market saturation of iPads in a few months, with the production ramping up and being available at so many retail points.

We're still on the upward slope of the bell shaped curve of iPad sales.

When I first read that I thought you were nuts. But now that I think about it, I think you are 100% right. When they first came out I didn't see any need for one but now I really want a decent sized tablet for browsing while at home. I'd venture to say that 90% of people out there don't know what a tablet is but know exactly what an iPad is. Now figure in all the old people on Verizon (alltel and verizon always had the most older customers) and the fact that the iPad is perfect for old people that just want to surf the net. Then there are also the college kids on Verizon and people that were holding off just because they hate ATT....its going to be big.

You haven't seen anything yet...

Originally, the iPads were going to be $100 cheaper across the board, when Gen II is sold, they'll drop the current prices of Gen I by $100 or more, and keep the rest of the industry off balance on the price point, they'll have figured out some ways to save $ on manufacturing costs by then, and still make $ hand over fist.

I'm seeing speculation that the next iPad will have CDMA and GSM radios (they can easily find the space to put in the larger chipset in an iPad), the iPhone is relatively space constrained because of it's form factor.

I think Moto is the next corporation to pull off a decent tablet. With Moto's know how and Google's help, it should be pretty slick, think collaboration like they had with the Moto Droid Gen I.

Yup I personally know many iPhone users who have a Sprint or Verizon Mifi cus of AT&T's crappy reception.
