Ipad wifi disconnecting during sleep

As the title says, my ipad mini 2 (up to date software) frequently disconnects from the wi-fi during the night. It stays connected to 3G but, as I've got limited data and keep the mobile data use quite locked down, often many apps that should be updating in the background aren't.

Is this common and normal or is something up?
