iPad space question...

Those of you that have used an iPad (preferably a new iPad, as that is what I'll be buying) what is your used storage space at right now?

I'm debating between the 32GB or 64GB 4G models right now. I'm not sure I really need the extra space but then again, I think I might want it at some point.

Really, I'm wondering what your space looks like when you've stored multiple apps (large ones, games, etc) and TV shows or movies. I know my Text Books will be taking up quite a bit of space too, so I'll factor that in.

16gb is very short with retina apps, even with iCloud.

That said, I don't see a need for 64 unless you plan on loading it up with media.

I have a iPad 16 GB version and it is plenty. Now 8 GB would of been to small. I have over 20 apps on it with over half of them being games only using 5.3 GB of space. With 8.5 GB of space left.

Even have a few tv shows on it still. I had more but deleted them. Still I was only using 7. something GB and had well over 6 GB left.

I don't put 1080p copies of stuff on my tablet sense there is no need.

Well, I would want things of a high enough quality to be comfortable to watch at a normal viewing distance. I guess worst case scenario is I fill up a 32GB and return it and trade up for the 64GB. I'll just have to max it out day one!

I originally bought a 16gb and exchanged it for a 32gb and that was a great decision. I don't put any music on mine just a couple movies and a few games along with some apps and I was about 75% full. It's good to not have to worry about storage space.

On my 16. Have around 18 gb free on my 32. 64 is probably overkill unless you have a whole lot of media

I went for the 64GB but was really hoping Apple would introduce a 128GB...Three or four movies ripped in Handbrake of decent quality run in at around 3-4GB per item. I'm looking over my shoulder already, but you have to love the screen.

This is somthing that is going to vary greatly from user to user. I have a (first generation) 16GB model and that is more than enough storage for my needs. I have full installs of Baldur's Gate and Planescape Torment on my iPad, all of my jailbreak data and apps as well as 10-15 ebooks and 20-30 apps. I have about 5 GB free, but I stream all of my audio and video. Encoding to an iPad friendly format and transferring via iTunes is way more work than I am willing to put into it at this point.

Yeah, this varies so wildly depending on your usage.

I just don't see much of a point in copying movies to the iPad. Streaming them off the network makes so much more sense to me. My 64GB iPad 2 had about 52GB of free space before I turned it in, and that was with a ton of games installed and even Rdio installed and caching a couple hundred songs.

I have 16 GB and it's plenty, because I don't have a bazillion apps on it. I don't have many games on it (besides Angry Birds), and I hate dedicated apps for most websites. I'd rather just surf the website. And if they require an iPad app to surf there, I just don't surf there.

As for media playback, the iPad doesn't support MKV playback anyway, unless you jailbreak it, and if you jailbreak it you can play movies off external flash media connected through an iPad camera connector.

Or you can just stream video. Some of the streaming software allows on-the-fly MKV re-encodes for the iPad. No jailbreaking required. I don't know how well it works though, since I just watch the video on my MacBook Pro anyway.

AVPlayerHD plays mkvs fine.

32gb here. 1gb handbrake rips look fine for kids movies. Others I have no idea. Problem I have is that I have not sorted my music and it takes up half of the thing. I could probably do with 1/4 of the music, but I am horrible at managing playlists.

When we are not on trips and taking movies, I usually have plenty of room to store music, apps, photos, books, etc
