ipad recovery mode question

For the second time my dad has somehow put his ipad mini into recovery mode and I have to fix it for him.

How could he be doing this? is the ipad defective? sorry for the stupid questions but I've never had this problem with my ipad so I have no idea how he keeps doing this.
 
Recovery mode is easy to get into. Start with the iPad off. Then just hold down the home button and the plug it into your computer.

Getting out of recovery mode is as simple as turning it off and on again.

I have, however, seen iPads that were stuck in a recovery mode loop. Simply taking it to the Apple store for an exchange is probably your easiest best.

Assuming it is under warranty of course.
