My father in law gave us his old Ipad...I have never worked with one before and I was hoping to get a few questions answered before I restore it.

Is there a way to keep the apps (paid for already) that are currently on the ipad, then restore it and log in with my wife's itunes account and then reinstall under her account?

Thanks in advance,
Lee

Nope. Once you sign in with a new account, you'll have to repurchase the applications.

You should lose the apps when you restore it as a new iPad as the account won't be associated with the iPad, but isn't it true that the iPad is still associated with his account? All you need to do is give him the iPad to hook up to his computer, and he should be able to sync the apps to it.

... at least I think that's what would happen! I know I've heard of people sharing stuff before by using one of the activations (you get five) for another person's device.

I think you can sign out of the account in the Store settings and then sign in with your own Apple ID. I think.

The last time I tried something similar, I could log in under an iTunes account and download apps, then log in to a different account and the apps already loaded would still work. Haven't tried in a few years though.

if he's willing to share, get the ipad, hook it up to your pc, sign in as him, transfer purchase (in itunes)

restore the ipad, transfer the apps back in.

On the ipad, after restored, log out as him if he's logged in, log in as your wife and continue to purchase new apps.

So old apps is under your dad's name and new apps under your wifes name..

You can wipe the ipad, set yourself up as a user and download apps, and can also download app from someone else's account if they're ok signing in.

Yeah. I've seen iDevices where one app update wanted a password for a specific Apple ID and another app update wanted the password for another Apple ID.
