In reporting its estimates, IDC said that these declines were due to factors other than the rising popularity of the iPad and other “media tablets.” NPD Group’s new report jibes with that sentiment, as the firm claims that only 14% of early iPad adopters decided against purchasing a traditional PC as a result of their tablet purchases. “The explosion of computer sales when Windows 7 launched, as well as the huge increase in netbook sales at that time, are much more to blame for weak consumer PC sales growth than the iPad,”

So much for that theory. Guess it has more to do with people buying powerful Windows 7 based machines a couple years ago, machines that even today are still pretty solid for most tasks. Software needs to evolve, even an Athlon 64 X2 from 2006 is still adequate for most people today.

Ugg this

Plus tablets of any kind don't replace a desktop or even a laptop, they replace netbooks so no one expected it to make a dent in PC sales.

Don't shoot the messenger, I just linked to NPD's results.

There was some hubbub not too long ago about people not buying PCs or laptops because they'd bought iPads or wanted to buy an iPad. At the time, I disagreed and said that it was because PC hardware had gotten overly powerful and that people didn't see a need to upgrade. Blame console oriented game development, if you wish, its partly to blame. But lets face the facts, you don't need Sandy Bridge for email, Youtube, Facebook, Hulu, and Netflix.

My main machine is a CD E8500 and a Radeon 4870, and still handles every game on the market easily. With only shittly optimized console ports requiring me to dial down the graphics settings. There's little incentive to upgrade.

I keep thinking about upgrading my PC, but I don't see the point. I even dialed down my CPU OC to 3.6GHz to run at stock volts, because any faster doesn't make sense. Same goes for my GPUs most of the time. PCs have stagnated.

Since I've gotten my iPad 2 I browse the web and do regular tasks on it a lot more than my main PC. It's just a better experience.

Lol. That's gotta be one of the dumbest statements I've heard in a while, thanks for the chuckles. :)

Well, genius, it's because sitting in my recliner while posting's more comfortable than sitting in the office chair at my PC. Aside from having my favorite games available, there isn't much I can't do with my iPad. I'm not chained to my desk, and that to me makes for a better experience. Got it now?

So you enjoy only having access to the web languages that Apple says you should have? Casual games only?

Its a 'lite' experience, but for true web experience, you need a more full featured device. :p

i think it makes sense. i've almost completely stopped using my computer for email since I got my smartphone. of course if i need to type out something long i use the computer, but I find myself using my computer almost half as often as i used to.

i can only imagine that with a tablet i would do even less on the computer. it wouldn't replace the need for a computer, but it would definitely reduce the use of a computer.

Getting a smartphone didn't affect my computer use, just made me more accessible and able to look up more information more quickly when in the 'field'.

But, we digress. :)

Thread is about how people were proclaiming the iPad was going to kill PC sales. The market data shows it didn't. I also recall several radio shows where the hosts claimed that the iPad was going to decimate the paper industry, and, while I definitely believe printed media's days are numbered, the iPad didn't deal any more severe a blow than the Kindle, Nook, or Nook Color.

Fair enough, I still use my computer a lot, i just don't need to check it as often, I never thought that the ipad would reduce computer sales, that is just silly, but i can agree that it might lesson how often you use your computer.

I haven't touched my laptop since I got an iPad 2. I guess it's more that I knew the tablet's capabilities and strong points before I got it, and luckily it covers 90% of what I do on a PC. When they come out with coding IDEs on iOS or Android, that will increase to 99%. (Besides heavy-duty gaming, of course, but then again tablets have their own benefits in that area too, as do consoles.)

EDIT: And Minecraft. When they come out with Minecraft for iOS I think I'm going to give up at life and become an iHobo.

I was "thinking" about swapping to a tablet from my Dell laptop. I decided.... why? What could I not do as quick or quicker with my laptop? Wasn't a whole lot. So instead I spent $75 to upgrade my hard drive and buy new screen hinges (they went bad). Oh and I threw a copy of Win 7 on there and it feels like new.

If I want to play .99 games or look something up online, I have my android phone for that. If I want to do more serious stuff I boot up the laptop quick. I just can't find a reason to go with a tablet yet. As excited as I was about the transformer I realized I didn't have much use for a tablet at all.

Yea, this is kinda what I was thinking. Did you see microsoft's financial results? Up across the board, except Windows, which is down 3% over this time last year...

...and analysts slammed them for not fighting back against the ipad. It's like they forget that this quarter last year was still in the insane windows 7 rush. Seriously, these people don't use their brains.

Most of the time, yes.

Actually my best friend's mom asked him after the iPad 1 announcement "so with an iPad I can get rid of my computer, right?" She never previously had an iDevice.

It reminded me that a large percentage of people hate computers for the same reason I love them- their complexity and possibilities.

Out of 20 replies in this thread, there are 3 of them mocking or berating apple users for their opinions.

And you guys think its the apple users who start up the shitstorm? Look in the mirror.

Edit: On another note, I totally agree with this study. An iPad is not a computer replacement. I sold my iPad after seeing that it has no marginal value to me over anything the iPhone does. My father has one and it is actually a great fit for someone like him. It works for some people and is not a good fit for others. Most tablets in general are not geared towards the hardcore computer user you see on this forum. They are geared towards the casual computer users who want to surf the internet in a simple, straightforward way. I don't think iPads are going to cannibalize PC sales at all, but I think they will eventually cannibalize netbook sales.

One thing many people forget about ipads at least is that they require another computer to update.

Not only are old computers good enough for most users, but they are often better with 16:10 screen instead of 16:9 everyone is peddling now. If performance went from good enough to good enough, and screen went from good to not as good, I have no interest in "upgrading."
