Hi all,

I own no laptop, and only have so much space in SD cards. So I'm considering grabbing the ipad camera connection kit, since i have a 32GB iPad. How does this work?

Do I plug the camera into the USB power, or must I use a card reader?

Does it save off NEF files? Can it view them?

How do I get the NEF files onto my PC back home?

Thanks!

The camera kit comes with two different pieces. One of them is an ipod connector to SD card reader. You pop the SD card into the reader and the ipad shows you all the pictures on the card. Then you select what files you want to download. It's really pretty simple. Except it only works with files which are named using the normal camera conventions (ie starts with IMG_ or DSC_ etc). If you have pictures which you imported from your camera and renamed the files to start with something logical say "Aruba_2010_001" then the ipad will NOT recognize these files. I had a fun time finding a batch rename program to get my existing photo library onto the ipad.

The other part of the camera connection kit is a ipod connector to USB adapter. You simply use the USB cable from your camera and plug it directly into this adapter. Then the import process works similarly to when you plugged in the SD card. I prefer connecting the SD card since it's faster for the ipad to read directly from the SD card instead of using the camera as a buffer.

It luckily does recognize NEF files and will download the JPEG and NEF file of each picture if you choose.

As far as getting the files back onto your PC, I haven't done this before since my PC has an SD card reader which I use to import these files without the ipad. However, I'm pretty sure it works just like it does with the iphone where you plug the ipad into the PC, and you can use the Windows camera picture import feature.
