iPad Air (and Mini?) is still having Uneven Dirty Whites / Yella Hues on screen

I remember when the iPhone 4 came out this was caused by an epoxy and went away in a few days.

Worst case, you can send it back to the store and they'll replace it on the spot.

Cool propaganda, bro. Care to back that up with facts or evidence?
You must buy Apple stocks... Sorry I don't buy Apple stocks nor any other stocks yet... I know I should...

Well considering they have same kind of problem that started from iPad 2 days and up until now I think it's pretty clear that Apple hasn't taken QC seriously.

I really don't care too much at this point as I no longer rely on iPads for videos.... I am thinking about using one for music and some browsing, so having some graphic flaws I can deal with.

There was a guy on Mac Rumors forums who'd returned 12 iPads I got him to admit he had ADD and was off his meds.

We've bought two ipad airs, both have the uneven screens. One was purchased a good 3 weeks ago, still has the uneven screen.

On both, there is a yellowish darker tinge on the side near the volume buttons.

On one, there is a very noticeable red hue on the side near the home button.

I read about this a bunch last night and it's very widespread, almost all of the stock has the yellow/dark hue on the side with the volume buttons.

...And rumor has it, that the primary cause of the yellow hue is that the backlighting has far fewer LEDS compared to the ipad4. The screens are much pickier about the way they are epoxied together, and as a result the vast majority have the yellow hue.

Thanks apple. I guess this is the begin of the downward quality spiral now that jobs is gone.

That is disappointing to hear. I have been holding off on getting a new iPad and this makes my decision to wait much easier. At this point I am seriously tempted to just get a refurbed iPad 4 and be done with it.

I hate the game of "return one just to get another one with the same issue" BS. I mean for a $200-$300 device, maybe, but for what these things costs this should be a non-issue.

Honestly.... I think I'm just going to stay with my 4, and let the poor first adopters sort through the mess.

FWIW - the 'better' of the two has a serial that starts with DMPLD, sept 2013. The DMQLM, of nov 2013 is far worse with the blatantly obvious reddish tones.

I am trying the "wrap them in a towel for 24 hours on full brightness" crap but I really doubt it will do much since it's not two layer glass like they used in the past.

I really was hoping this stuff wouldn't start happening with jobs gone, but I really do think this is the beginning of the end of good QC for apple.

In the past they've had some small teething problems with new devices, but nothing this blatantly obvious and widespread.

There is no way they didn't know about this before release, and if they didn't, well, just another example of how jobs helped make sure this crap didn't get through production.

Good article:

"While in the previous two generations, Apple relied on 84 LED lights for screen brightness, Apple is now said to be achieving that brightness more efficiently with just 36 LED lights.

Those lights may be brighter, but Apple is also said to be using optical film layers that distribute light across the display, according to Andrew Rassweiler, analyst with IHS. The use of these thin layers allows Apple to use fewer LEDs, which reduces device weight and power needs."

Well the screen flaws existed long before Steve got sick and passed away... iPad1 and 2's had bunch of screen issues (uneven whites and light leaks). I do notice the new iPads don't seem to have light leakage but yellow / pink tint hue in the whites.

Hmmmmm.... that may explain why one side of the screen is brighter and the other half side of the screen is dimmer with yellow hues on their latest iPad displays.

I looked around some reviews on the web and found this comparison photo for iPad Mini Retina and Air.

bird-comparison-small-3.jpg

Two things I have noticed.

1). iPad Mini Retina has muted color. You can see how much more real and vibrant the iPad Air looks. Look at the blue bird and the red scotch tape holder. This appears to be true as users are experiencing washed out pictures.

2). BOTH of the displays have yellow hue half way across the screen toward the home button. Brighter white on the opposite side.

Yella (and some case pink) hue is evident on all iPad Air displays. But it's sad to hear reports from people that the iPad Mini Retina is having the same issue. A few guys did report that their Mini Retina's are perfect, no yella hues. That must be the defective one then cause all should have uneven whites. 😀

Just picked up an iPad Air yesterday. No issues with the screen here except trying to get used to that "hollow" feeling...

I've had great luck with Apple hardware until recently. Iphone5s with crackling speakerphone. The next 5s had noticeable display gradient. Now the airs all have shoddy display backlighting and hollow sounding screens, if you're lucky. Some have very noticeable yellow tinge.

Another issue, somewhat different, is that the air's screen polarization is rotated where it's dim in the horizontal orientation if you're wearing polarized sunglasses.

These sorts of things are not surprising in the $300 range arena. But if you're charging over $600 for a tablet these these details need to be worked out.

I bought my wife an iPad Air for Christmas. This thread makes me wonder if I should open it up and take a look so I'll have time to return and get a new one before Christmas if necessary.

They all have issues. At best, you have hollow cheap sounds when you tap the screen and gradients from the insufficient led backlighting. I broke down and bought AppleCare, and will try swapping it out in a few months.

My ipad 4 was a much better built device.

I got to play with an Air over the holiday and I was surprised when I noticed exactly the same thing. The new iPad feels incredibly cheap to me, no better than any other tablet. My iPad 3 feels like a premium device. The Air feels like something made to cut costs.

We're used to associate weight with quality. Going from iPhone 4 to 5 felt the same way, it doesn't mean it's poorly built.

They do seem to have more screen issues than previous models. I have an Air coming in this week, so I'll be inspecting it carefully. If the screen isn't up to par, I'll just exchange it or get a refund.

She honestly probably won't notice. Hopefully they'll iron out these issues before the next refresh, as I'll probably be ready to upgrade from my iPad 4 then.
