iPad 2 at Fry's - $299!

Great news for folks looking to score an iPad 2 on the cheap. It looks like Fry’s Electronics is currently offering 16GB Wi-Fi iPad 2s for just $299 this week.

That’s $100 cheaper than Apple, or any other US retailer, is selling the tablet for. So if there’s a Fry’s in your local area, this is definitely worth checking out…

The deal was picked up by the folks over at 9to5Toys, who are well-known for spotting savings. The site says that this is the best deal they’ve ever seen on a second-gen iPad.

It looks like the sale only applies to in-store pickups (no online orders), and some folks are seeing a price tag of $339. But hey, that’s still a savings of $60 bucks.

Fry’s says stock is limited by location, and the sale ends July 19th.

I've been thinking about getting a tablet for a while now. How does this stack up against the Nexus 7 for $250 (equivalent memory)?
The iPad2 has a larger screen which is a dramatic difference. I can't see buying the Nexus7 with a $299 iPad2 but perhaps I'm missing something.
On the other hand, I use an Android phone and can see some of my apps being VERY nice on a tablet (SwiftKey3 & FlexT9 keyboards, both apps that I own). I've heard swype-style appls like FlexT9 aren't as great on larger screens, but I could see SwiftKey 3 being pretty decent.

No fanboys need apply.

i honestly can't see the 16GB nexus 7 being worthwhile if ipad2s become $299 with regularity. not only do you get bigger screen and bigger battery, the ipad has far more tablet-centric applications than android does.

Other than apps which I admit is a big deal the nexus has double the CPU basically, much more ram to keep more browser tabs open , a much higher dpi screen given its smaller and higher res and a GPS onboard which wifi ipads don't have. I don't think its a definite buy the iPad especially if you use it mostly for web browsing in which case the browsers on android are better I.e. real chrome.
 
I've used several tablets ranging from iPad3 to the Kindle Fire. I've come to find that the old adage of it depends on the software to be true. Some android tablets may have more power and so forth, but Apple's ecosystem is by far the most mature. If you want to use the latest apps/games then you need to be on an iOS device. Even my iPad1 is still great for surfing the web and playing almost any app.

how do you deal with the lack of Flash on the Ipad?

also how long does the Ipad battery REALLY last?

I find that battery life for rechargeables usually end up being about half of what their original specs.


I'm not a hater or a fanboy ... just want real information

if you're going to be reading a lot of ebooks i'd say N7 hands down. it weights almost half of what the Ipad weights, and has a higher resolution screen for much crisper text.
 
Got two Nexus 7's (one to keep and one as a gift). I do have an iPad2 but I think it's too big to read on. It's also far too heavy and slippery for holding long periods of time without a cover. I think the Nexus 7 is the perfect size for reading and for taking it with you everywhere. I also have JB on my phone so I know what to expect (pretty sweet experience).
