That's a pretty silly blanket statement.... I use my smart phone quite heavily throughout the week, but I tend to not do a lot of things such as streaming (Pandora, Netflix, etc).

I agree. Most months, I fit into the AT&T 200MB plan. And I have it sync'ing my email, calendar and I use it frequently throughout the day. But I leverage WiFi at home and in restaurants and coffee shops. If you have WiFi at home and at work (or school) then it's definitely possible to get away with a 200MB plan or less.

As far as the OP... I think it will be announced soon... like within a week or two. It will be available on all carriers in the US. And beyond that I pretty much agree with most of what Moose wrote.

I'm surprised the Moscone Center hasn't been reserved (that we know of) yet. Looks like a Sept 30th launch, and the announcement has been 2 weeks prior to the launch for the last 2 years, so we'll see an official release I'm thinking this week or next...

I hate that SJ is so ill, this will prob be the first announcement of an iPhone he hasn't been a major part of :(

Wow, you must read a lot of such things! I read websites sometimes, but the majority of my battery life goes to games. At least in my defense, they're usually puzzle games. ;) Lately, I've been playing Kenken, which kills about 10% of my battery per 45 minutes. :\

honestly you have to waste a lot of time downloading and stuff. I read tons of Pulse News and a lot of Facebook/Twitter everyday and I sit around 1.2gb max. I can say the same for my iPhone friends although it seems the iPhone likes to sip data better than Android devices. I believe it's all the syncing our phones do.

Streaming youtube and stuff is just ridiculous. There are only a few places where I get reliable data in SF and one of them is at my gf's place. The other places I just hope to get enough data to checkin on foursquare. LoL. And let's not even talk about my Las Vegas trips. Those are practically worthless with AT&T. I can't even load foursquare on a typical non convention weekend. I feel like the only time I got reliable data was at 3am when I'm sitting upstairs at Tao beach cooling off from the ridiculous dance floor.

I'd save Netflix for home even if it means using my gf's Wii and having only 480p on a big screen. It's just far more enjoyable to watch TV and stuff at home. Also the same goes for music. My iPod is loaded with 8GB of music that I'll play in the car rather than to use Slacker/Pandora.

I'd say I use my phone more as a social tool with Facebook/Twitter/Yelp/Foursquare/Gchat more than a media consumption device.

Anyway, I'm hoping for 4" for an iP5. Anything less is a bit small for me.

Or maybe they won't launch a new one at all for a few more months and just keep filing lawsuits against most of their competitors.

i use my phone pretty liberally throughout they day for news, email, stocks, etc but little or no streaming of video or music. i never use wifi. my billing cycle ends on the third and so far ive used 55mb. how someone could use 2 gigs doing regular surfing is beyond me, that would be almost impossible unless youre using your smartphone as your main way of getting on the web

I use, on average, about 5 gigs per month on my phone. Sometimes over 7 gigs, then tmo throttles the crap out of it. Most of that data is setting up my phone as an AP so I can stream movies to my transformer tablet when I am on the road, staying at my gfs house where her weak wifi doesnt travel to the bedroom too well.

You don't really use your smartphone heavily at all to only use 500MB.

I don't know why people think this. There are a LOT of things you can do with a smartphone that don't involve using a lot of data. I'd argue that unless you're streaming, tethering, or downloading a lot of large games/files, its quite difficult to go over 2GB. Especially if you use wifi when its available.

i use my phone for all sorts of browsing, not a lot of streaming of videos/music, but occasionally, i still average around 2gb, give or take a little.

I never turn on wifi though when im home, if i did i could probably cut it down some, but not near 200mb. luckily im grandfathered in to Verizon u/l for 29$...

on the IP5 topic, im just hoping for a 4 inch screen and i'll go from there, not sure if i wanna make the switch back from android though, sometimes my wifes ip4 feels like a child's toy...

obvious answer: why bother switching to wifi when I got unlimited 3g

1) Wifi is faster than 3G (not always of course, but usually)
2) In many phones, the wifi radio is more battery efficient than 3G, particularly if your signal is low (when I had Sprint, battery was ATROCIOUS on ev-do with low signal)
3) If you are on a carrier with caps, you don't count against your cap (obviously not an issue in your scenario, but still, most people have caps these days)

I understand it can be annoying to turn wifi on and off all the time, but there are certainly good reasons to use it.

Fair enough, but 3g is most certainly good enough to stream pandora 24/7 (which is where I blow through a lot of my data)

I'm not sure what the iP5 will be like, but for me, it has to have a larger screen. That or the top and bottom bezel heavily reduced.

Why bother using broadband when you can just plug in a 300 baud modem? OK maybe 300 baud isn't quite a fair comparison but the point is that Wifi speed > 3g. Or at least it should be.

True. My 3g is ~3-5 mbps, wifi for me is 15-20 mbps. Bit dif. If it was 4g I can see it being an argument but not 3g.

I'd like a 4" screen and Verizon LTE. If not, not sure what I'm going to do.

Methinks, like a lot of folk, the 5 will have a bigger screen, dual core and better os but it wont be an evolutionary step from the 4. Not a bad thing but not a must-have. I think LTE is still not widespread enough. Im more curious as to what the 6 will bring. But that is way off.

my problem with using public wifi is those annoying login pages. way too lazy to do that shit, 3g good enough to do what I need to do.

good points though (i use wifi at home)
