iP5 speculation thread

I suspect we'll see a few specific things launching with the iPhone 5.

1.) Wedge shaped iPhone with ~4" screen shaped like the #2 pic in this group:http://micgadget.com/15182/iphone-5-cases-are-now-everywhere-in-china-part-2/

2.) iP4 continues like the iP3GS

3.) iP3GS discontinued

4.) iP4S (or something like that) essentially, an iPhone 4 decontented, maybe 8GB memory, less expensive components, metal or plastic back, maybe a cheaper screen. For sale on prepaid service plans perhaps not available in the US.

5.) iPod Touch refresh, with a cellular data option, current generation continues as before, sold alongside the model with cell data. (think mini iPad)

Availability on Sprint seems a given at this point, unsure if TMobile gets it or not, likely not...

#4 is pretty likely, Apple needs a cheap phone to sell on the pre paid market, and has said they'll be doing something.

#5 I dunno, it makes sense if you look at it from a generating $ kind of mindset, essentially gives Apple a mini tablet computer, and gives Apple and the carriers an income stream for the data plan. Think of it like a device for developing countries and pre/young teens.

With a cellular data enabled iPod Touch, I could make due without a cell phone if I had to, using Google Voice or the many texting plans out there that use cell data...

I'm thinking multiple devices because of all the conflicting cases, parts, rumors that are coming out. In the past, the cases have been pretty spot on, and in this case, multiple devices are the only thing that can account for them.

Yep, it may even be the same device, the radio in the iP4 was actually capable of doing it, but was never implemented.

I suspect we'll see a release on AT&T, Verizon & Sprint at the same time.

I think it's fairly obvious that iPhone 5 will either look like an iPod Touch with more screen and less bezel, or like an iPhone 4 with more screen and less bezel. More indication goes to the prior, but we never know.

The way I see it, it only makes sense if Apple will introduce an iPhone 4S with both GSM and CDMA support as the top-end device. It makes no sense for them to revamp the iPhone 4 design so drastically, save for the antenna bands.

The lower-end device could be an iPod Touch, or iPhone "5" that doubles as a phone device, with either bigger screen or less bezel, or both. The innards would likely include a single-core version of the A5 chip, and so on...

My guesses:

-3.7 inch screen of same resolution as iP4.

-Same CPU as iPad 2 but weaker GPU.

-Larger bottom button

-No LTE on Verizon

Slightly larger screen(3.7" is my guess), dual core, 8MP camera, non-glass body. I think they will focus more on the OS than the phone. A little bigger screen, better camera, and going away from the dumb glass body. iOS 5 with redone notification and iMessage will be the big changes.

I don't think Verizon and AT&T would go for this unless it was 4g capable.

And can you imagine how great that would be? If it had a mic, and it could be jailbroken and run VOIP apps. Then we could have a $30 a month data plan with no contract like the iPad.

At a glance, I read it as "ejaculation." For some Apple-diehards, maybe that's not a stretch.

Depending, I might get the wife to go iPhone when it comes out. From what I've seen, it doesn't seem a whole lot different from iP4.

DT is not selling T-Mo because they are making a lot of money. the churn is at 2.5%. AT&T is at 1.43%, before the Verizon iphone it was 1.29%. that means that for every customer that leaves T-Mo they have to spend money to replace them just to keep the same revenue numbers. it has been well documented before that with the iphone AT&T stole everyone's best postpaid customers, especially T-mo which has had a pretty weak smartphone lineup until recently.

it's in apple's interest to have as many carriers as possible competing for their phone since they can charge whatever they want. less carriers who are more powerful means they can dictate the cost they will pay for the iphone. remember that most phones are bought on a 2 year contract so if AT&T told apple they won't pay their price one year it doesn't mean that all their iphone customers will leave that quarter. apple will lose in the short term with a drop in revenue

with all the android phones verizon has i don't even think they care if it's their flagship phone. they just want it because it will keep them from spending money to find new customers.

i wouldn't even be surprised if at&t is going to tell apple to keep the iphone from t-mo. giving the iphone to sprint and not t-mo will just accelerate churn. not all the customers have to leave, just enough to make it impossible to pay the operating costs of running the network. having t-mo go belly up means it's cheaper for everyone to get their customers and assets

an iphone on sprint and t-mo will mean the loss of customers who want an iphone but refused to go to AT&T for whatever reason

How much data do you use to really worry about overages? It's pretty rare when I go over 500mb a month. While "4G" certainly gives me the ability to do that easier, it shouldn't be too bad.

You don't really use your smartphone heavily at all to only use 500MB.

if you have a full time job it's pretty hard to go over 2GB unless you disable wifi just to use the mobile network and stream netflix on your phone at home every day. i couldn't even stream pandora all day because i got tired of listening to music after 3 hours or so. and that's about 100MB per day

with android you would have to set all your accounts to sync everything in the background all the time

That's a pretty silly blanket statement.... I use my smart phone quite heavily throughout the week, but I tend to not do a lot of things such as streaming (Pandora, Netflix, etc).

FaceTime doesn't work over 3G, but arguably works better with a phone number than email (less data to input). iMessage works best if there is SMS to fall back on, and if there is a set number to send to instead of an email because sending one message will cause it to appear on all devices that are connected to the same Apple ID.

Both of those are reasons why the next iPod Touch might well be a cheap iPhone instead of an iPod Touch with a crippled cellular modem.

I rack up just shy of 2GB, and I haven't streamed anything in a while.
Mostly reading, blogs, newsfeeds, etc.

Wow, you must read a lot of such things! I read websites sometimes, but the majority of my battery life goes to games. At least in my defense, they're usually puzzle games. Lately, I've been playing Kenken, which kills about 10% of my battery per 45 minutes. :\
