IP35 Pro NEW PROBLEM

My system has been completely and totally stable for weeks now. See signature for details ...

Just now I was playing Crysis, and after about a half hour or so it crashed. Hard! Upon restarting, the BIOS was all at defaults and Windows brought up the sound manager, asking what was plugged in to the ports for front and rear speakers.

(I backed out of this and restarted one more time)

This next time (in XP Pro) Windows came up with the add-hardware wizard and could not identify the device it was trying to install. I look in the Device Mangler and all my stuff, including the Sound (On Board OEM) was there.

I tested the sound card from the control panel; all works fine front and rear speakers. Everything else works.

Yet Windows now has this unknown device in the DM that was not there an hour ago, before that crash.

Since on restart, XP asked what was plugged in to the sound ports, I am thinking it's a sound card driver issue. But it all works - that's the issue!

I have uninstalled, refreshed, and each time the DM asks for drivers for this unknown device. I have no idea what it is, or what and why it crashed.

Suggestions?

Hmm, Maybe your Audio driver is fubar? I don't have a nvidia card, but my 3870 shows an unknown device,(audio for the 3870 I presume), does the 8800gt have the hdmi out as well? If so that could possibly be it too.

No HDMI on this one, and the sound works fine. Maybe I need to reinstall both audio and video though? Even though everythings' fine except that busted device in the device manager?

is the uGuru Windows GUI working?
If not it's probably uGuru.

Yes it is, works fine - but I had to re input all the data. The numbers were all zeroed out when it restarted until I reset defaults. But it's working now.
