Linksys BEFSR41 router
DHCP enabled
No filtering is activated on the router
WinXP machine with realtek NIC

This machine worked fine for several months. Suddenly, it had no internet access. If I assign it an IP out of the DHCP pool, all works great. It will not receive an IP from the router though. I tried releasing and renewing. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling the NIC. Tried using default WinXP drivers. Tried downloading new drivers. It's not really a huge problem because I have access, but it bugs me :D Any suggestions? Thanks.

I like to use static IPs as well, but this particular problem is on a friend's network. She lives in a house with 7 other girls and none of them are very computer-savvy. They also have a lot of turnover in their house from year to year so I'm trying to make it as plug-and-pray as I can for their sake.

Actually it could be spyware related. Spyware will corrupt crap. Try running LSP fix on her machine and adaware, cw shredder also.

Are the other girls having the same issue? If they are, it's a router issue. If not, it's her computer's problem. Either way, sounds like time for a house call. :D

It took a house call to get this far :) Nobody else is having this issue, so I don't think it's the router. I just wanted to confirm what the problem is, so if it happens again they know how to fix it.

amdskip is likely on the money. Winsock corruption. Spybot has a built in utility to repair it but you can also go get LSFIX as well. I'd try spybot search and destroy first. Make sure you get up to date includes.

Well I know in Pennsylvania, this many girls living alone in 1 building constitutes a brothel.

that said, did you reinstall tcp/ip. since there is 7 girls, is there a chance the ip pool got all used up (why? i dunno, but check).

its weird. are you sure the computer is set up for dynamic ip? is there anything else in the way that would prohibit the dhcp signal from getting to the computer?

run the virus checker of your preference and adaware.

worst case, reinstall.

If that is what you are doing then tell her its the underwire from her bra causing interferance. Start throwing out some fancy terms like rf, and tcp/ip is a serious of electric charges, the wire confuses the equipment....

im sjure you will use this wisely.
