IP/Packet Sniffers

I'm trying to keep better track on what systems are using what IP's in our office, I'm new to the IP sniffing area, and not too sure how to do this.

I'm trying to use EtherDetect right now, it seems to be working fine, but I'm not too sure how to tie this in with the workstations to find out things such as the machine name, username, or whatever, if it's even possible.

Also, are there any better programs than EtherDetect? I can't seem to find very many quality ones.

Why not check with the DHCP server?

We don't use DHCP, we assign each computer their own static IP. It works fine, but after awhile, especially when we move people around the office, the IP's get lost, due to my own incompetance.

So what I'm trying to do is find a way to grab everyones IP and machine name, and any other helpful information that will help prevent this from now on.

I second that motion. DHCP is EZ. if you refuse to use dhcp here is what you should be doing. Create a spreadsheet and assign ip addresses to workstation names. get a label maker and put the workstation name on the workstation itself or the monitor. then you will only have to refer to your spreadsheet to determine the ip address. you should also have a common naming scheme. this should take a half hour at the most depending on how many stations you have.

also reserve a range for network printers and other devices that may require an ip address.
