Is there a website that traces IP addresses down to the very city or even address? I've seen some webpages that do this based on a given IP address. WHOIS seems a little too general? Or am I just not using it correctly?

Nachos!

IP addresses are not associated with a physical location. ALl the sites that try to get a city are jsut guessing, really.

You can probably trace an IP back to the ISP and that's it.... From the ISP you can GUESS the city, but I doubt you will know for sure from the trace...

Ahh... I used IMchaos once and they have a survey program that narrows down someone IP address when they click on the "survey" that you have posted. It lists everything from IP address, host, city, etc. Are they just doing the same thing here or something else?

It's a guess. IPv6 implements some sort of geo-location technology, IIRC, but traditional IPv4 does not.

There is no standard way to associate a physical location with an ip address. The way most of those things work is the result of alot of research.

Neotrace does a whois and sees where the registrant is. My domain appears to be in PA, even though the webhost is not in Pennsylvania. It can't do better than guess if it doesn't have a whois.

through IRC you can see the person's hostmask; that helps a lot when trying to find out state/city the person is connecting from.
