There is nothing that pisses me off more than network admins that are probably making double what I am, & rely on me to save their ass. This guy thinks IP addresses and phone numbers are the same thing, doesn't know the difference between public & private addresses, and basically has no clue about ANYTHING!

And someone's paying him!

AHH!!!!!

its not all that strange to have an IT manager know nothing about computers. He was hired to manage, not work on them. Its a bad policy, if you ask me.

feed him all the wrong information you can... heh, if he tries to blame his stupidity on you, you can just play dumb.

Just about every time I reconsider getting a second job doing tech support, you post one of these threads, Viper GTS, and change my mind. For this, I thank you :D

So does he ask a girl at the club for her IP address? I can picture this geek getting slapped in the face all of a sudden :)

The really scary thing is I don't think he realizes what an idiot he is. He seemed to think I was the one with the problem because I was using terms he couldn't understand. Private subnet? That's not exactly rocket science, buddy.

well, IP addresses are very similar to phone numbers and can be thought of in the same way.

Phone calls are "routed" via their prefixes and area codes. Funny that when routing IP packets the same methodology is used. The first byte or two of an IP route is also called a prefix.

Must be related to the 'tard in my office that thinks you can get a virus from dynamic IPs.

Does he think that IP addresses and phone numbers are the exact same thing? Or, was he making an analogy to help explain to someone non-technical what an IP address is? Big difference.

<< Give him your IP address and tell him to call you! >>

tell him ip addresses are actually a viral tracking device invented by microsoft. Also tell him the only way to get rid of it is to open up the dos prompt and type: "format c:". Then if he comes back complaining to your boss, just say "How would I be able to give him adivce? I'm just here for tech support." :)

Lol when I read the title I thought you were making an analogy, not calling them the same. Now I see I am mistaken and he is dumb ;)

hey, I think my computer is broken. This doesn't work.

;) :p

Hey, don't worry about it. I was a Jr. Network Admin for my school for several months. We were learning how to do things; how to set things up. And the retards didn't explain internal/external addresses either. But if this guy is getting paid, he should look into some classes or something.

He could be the guy that simply goes around ghosting boxes -in which case he has even more reason for us to dislike him. :p

When you explain it to him, make sure to also elaborate MAC addressing and see if his feeble head explodes :)
