IP Address Question With Router?

Hi,
I'm looking to network two computers off a single @home cable ISP connection. I'm looking at the Netgear 314 and the Netgear description page says that I can connect off of a single IP address? Is this true?

I always thought that I would have to spend an extra $5 a month for an extra IP address because the techs at @home told me that I couldn't surf the net on both computers at the same time without paying the extra $5 for an additional IP addy.

Is this true with most routers? Is the Netgear anything special in this regard?

I'm new to networking, so please be kind. 😉

With routers, the router will be assigned the IP address. It in turn will give out different IPs to your PCs. This seems to be a good way since either PC can use the internet without having the other on.
With Hubs, 1PC will have access to the internet, this Pc will also have 2 NIC cards. 1 for the cable modem and 1 for the other PC, PC2 gains access thru PC1 via an internet connection sharing program.
Routers seems to be the best bet. I have 2 IPs at the moment, mainly because they have forgotten to charge me for the extra🙂 Been close to a year now. Rates are about to go up $5.00 here, so If they catch on, a router is in the future.

Let me see if I follow you. With the router, it will give out IP addresses even though I only paid for one from @home?

I understand that I wouldn't have to have my main pc on with a router, but would two people be able to surf at the same time with a router and only 1 IP address from my cable service?

Thanks again,

Sal
