I have 2 computers on my network hooked up though a Linksys router and for some reason my IP address changes every day on both computers. I'm not sure why or how since I don't do it. I'm just wondering if there is a way I can stop it from changing? Thanks.

It is supposed to change as most routers assign the IP to each computer thru DHCP & a Lease which usually expires every 24Hrs or so

If you want it to stay the same, you need to Manually Configure a Static IP Address & Subnet on both the Computer & in the Router Setup
for whatever LAN Port on the Router your computer is connected to.

Thanks. This just started a few months ago which is why I thought it was odd.

Many Routers let you se the IP to much longer time (or to never expire).

Some Routers let you assign the same IP to same computer within the DHCP; it called IP Reservation (BuffaloTech, and Netgear are examples).

If you have flashable Linksys (WRT54G v1-4), flash it with 3rd party firmware, most of them add IP reservation to the Router.

On all my routers you can just go into the DHCP settings and input the MAc addresses of your computers and assign them a specific IP. Then you don't have ot touch the setting on the computer, just on the router.

I think on my SMC router it's called Fixed Mapping within the DHCP settings area.

IP changing is a good thing from a security standpoint - so unless its causing a problem there's no need to mess with it.

Do you turn them off at night? The non-technical solution might just be to boot them up in the same order every morning ;)

Or, if it really bothers you, just assign them static IP addresses. It only takes a couple of mouseclicks.
