Des Moines police are investigating a string of attacks at the Iowa State Fair, and say they may be racially motivated.

Police say in the latest attack on the fair's final night, Sunday, 30 to 40 teens roamed the fairgrounds looking for trouble.

Some teens had been yelling, "It's beat whitey night."

What's with the media that they cannot call it what it is? The media practically shut down over the Henry Louis Gates Jr. fiasco and following "beer summit". This story is barely in the news.

Double standard or what?

From what I hear, local fairs seem to be a breeding ground of retardation. Maybe Obama has learned his lesson and doesn't want to jump into soon. Every time he does it backfires against him.

So people were walking around yelling "beat whitey night", and this is the police department's thought on the matter:

Des Moines Police spokeswoman Lori Lavorato said officers are still trying to figure out what role, if any, race had in the incidents.

"We had a lot of assaults on people randomly walking out of the Iowa State Fair. Most of our victims happen to be white. Is that a racial thing? I don't know. It's all under investigation," she said.

Really? You don't know and its under investigation?

Are they waiting for Jackson/Sharpton to give approval or something? If it was the other way around the news wouldn't hesitate to call it racially motivated or hate crime.

It is really pathetic to watch these people tippy toe calling this racially motivated. White people are so afraid of having the racist label put on them they wont call it like they see it.

Several accounts of these people yelling "Its beat whitey night" and they cant figure out if it is racially motivated?

Obviously it's racially motivated, but the ironic thing is that if it really was "beat blackey night", the rightwingers on this forum would find a way to argue that it wasn't racist.

Kind of like how you just took a story about black kids running around commiting hate crimes, and turned it around on "right wingers"?

Right, and that makes beat whitey night not racist.

sure sounds like it was racially motivated. i won't hold my breath over the media saying it was racially motivated (well maybe fox) or anyone in power.

No way will the president step in. i think he has learned his lesson of saying something is racial after the last 2 times heh.

Most of the comments in this thread are fail. The comments of the police are appropriate and professional, and you'll find that similar comments are initially made by the police in cases of white on black violence. When a case is in early stages of investigation, it's what they usually say. People in the community are a different matter - they may rush to judgment. So someone like a Sharpton might come out and call something racially motivated before all the facts are in, but he's a political commentator and that's what political commentators of all stripes do. As for the police, they're saying and doing exactly what they should be saying and doing. They're reserving judgment until all the facts are in.

Waiting for Craig to chime in about how these people couldn't possibly have meant this racially...

Can someone help me to understand why the locked thread is a troll thread and this one is not?
