Or you can look at it another way and say that iPhone users actually use ad-supported apps more than Android users.

That and they don't use "adblock".

...and battery doesn't suffer.

I think it is more of an assumption that ios is safer than android. Like osx is safer than winx. Probably less porn ads on ios too.

But well, in general, it's true that iOS is safer than Android by a long shot. It doesn't help that Android is open-source and has a large install base.

But I'm more amazed by the fact that despite its larger install base, it doesn't rake in more money for Google.

I wonder how that affects Google's decision to work harder on improving the Android OS...

Saw the rebuttal on this story already. Its because the iOS figures include all iPods, iPhones, and iPads released over their entire history. Android's first phone was released in October 2008, with the first one that sold in quantity in October 2009. But it wasn't until 2011 that Android took off. The bulk of Android's money was only made in a year.

There's seriously porn ads on Android? That's news to me. I would find that incredibly annoying.

I've never seen a single porn ad in just under 2 years using Android. Dating services and crappy social networks, yes, but no porn ads.

Siri is the first step. at the very least they are going to direct the most lucrative searches to yelp and any other partners they sign up and the crap to google

Siri defaults most of its queries to WolframAlpha, Wikipedia, and Yelp as a matter of fact.

It'll only default to "web search" (can be either Google, Yahoo, Bing depending on your settings) when you ask something it "doesn't understand".

siri is still in beta. the point is that apple is controlling where the search goes in some instances and google is losing out on some of them. last year there were lots of articles about how a lot of small companies were calling apple to partner for Siri

same with maps. after google started charging for maps people started looking at open street map. apple is already using it on iphoto. and it's an open secret that apple is developing it's own maps/navigation app for iOS

google is getting the death by thousand paper cuts treatment like MS. they aren't dying but they are getting attacked on too many fronts by smaller faster moving companies and anything outside their core business hasn't made that much money

And that number's still less than if you took just HTC Android models alone and combine them. All Android makers/models together would be 100 times more than Apple products.

Why is it I'm doubting HTC outsells every iOS device made by Apple?

A lot of people seem to forget about iPod Touch's when talking about Apple's iOS market share.

There are a LOT of iPod Touch's out there...

Hasn't Android already surpassed iOS in terms of total number of devices sold? If that's the case, does it really matter when the devices were sold? I suppose it's possible that tablets generate more ad revenue for some reason and that the iPad skews the results. Otherwise, both platforms have been growing exponentially so that even though Apple had a 2 year head start, the revenue potential from that stretch of time should not result in such a large gap.

As far as the last number I saw late fall last year, like right before the 4S came out, Apple sold more iOS devices than devices running Android if you count the iPad and iPod touch into the numbers. I don't know what effect the Kindle Fire might have had on the numbers and I've not bothered to look recently.

Edit: this is from November 2011. Easiest I could find on the Googles
http://news.cnet.com/8301-33200_3-57323943-290/ios-vs-android-lots-of-stats-little-clarity/

States number from Apple and Google. Apple says 250m, Google says 190m.

No, you've got that part backwards actually.

Or the screen of iPhones and iPods are so small that Apple users click on ads by accident with their fat fingers. I want to believe no one really clicks on ads on purpose regardless of platform.

yeah, nobody wants to click on ads. Thats why google makes 90%+ of its money on Ads. All of those clicks are by accident...

Only in phones. When combined with all iPods, which are all iOS, the number of iOS devices out there is staggering.

Also, I've never seen a porn ad in any Android device ever, rooted or stock.
