i have an 831 that can't do much of anything i want it to do because of the lousy IOS installed. i want to get at least 12.3 to enable the fast ethernet ports, and to be able to use QoS properly.

do i need to plonk down the $100+ for the smartnet, or can i purchase the IOS somewhere cheaply?
 
thanks, but these are really expensive. there's no place to buy them for under $50 for something small like an 831? the cheapest ATM is going to run me $80.
 
Then your other option is simply to buy another one with a later IOS. Try eBay. I did a quick search and as of this writing, there are 18 available starting at $30
 
xyyz, SmartNet is deliberately priced at just a hair more than it costs for a one-time update. Just buy the SmartNet for a year.
