I have a Samsung S4 and my wife has an iPhone5s
I'm used to being able to watch movies and play music off of (dlna enabled) network shares using ES File Explorer on my android devices. Most of the files are in 1080p MKVs but it is a mix of wmv, avi's, mpgs. Music is in MP3 and wmv formats.

Can anyone recommend a free ios app that can do the same?

Free? No, but there are a bunch that costs a few bucks.

There's BTSync, that's free. For just videos, I like AirVideo HD (new version). It's $3 or $4 IIRC. If you have an AppleTV, it will also work to airplay the videos to your TV.

Several of the iOS video players gave integrated file system browsers. May just want to do a search for video players and download some of the free versions and see how you like them.
