Just got it on my 3rd gen iPad (wifi) and iPhone 4s (ATT)

It's got a clock app for the iPad:

How's Siri? I'm going to wait to upgrade until there is a proper jailbreak.

Only took them 3 major iOS upgrades to add the clock app, heh.

It looks nice though. And it seems it has weather integrated in it too? That's cool.

iOS 6 is a very meh "update" in my opinions. Apple mostly tried to answer questions where there is none, and as a whole, there isn't a lot more than iOS 5 in order for this update to be called iOS 6. I think it's more appropriate that they should call it iOS 5.2 or something of the sort.

Also there's the problem that after 6 iterations, the interface remains relatively the same while the hardware gets incrementally more powerful.

I wasn't expecting a major overhaul, of course, but they could at least open up the Siri API to us developers, seeing as it's an easy enough task.

Or official widgets in the Notification Center.

Instead, we get a set of new APIs that do the same thing old APIs do.

I'm hoping like they did with iOS 5 they'll add more features up until the iOS is released. Even then there were a few "surprises" when it was released. Hopeing...

iOS 5 didn't change drastically. They "tweaked" existing features, not add to them.

So as a developer, I'd have to say... iOS 6 is very disappointing. It doesn't offer anything substantially new over iOS 5 (other than revamped Maps and new Siri functionality), and a jailbroken iOS 5 still does the majority (or more) of what iOS 6 offers.

I was hoping for a Siri API that would allow developers to interface their apps with Siri directly, but I guess we'll have to wait for another year before that happens.

So how do you start the navigation or is that not in yet? I was trying to get that going this morning to see how it well it works but I could only get it to do the old style of nav where you're manually progressing through the directions.

Keep in mind that not everything about iOS 6 has been released yet, when iPhone 5 comes out, there might be new "tricks" with the extra pixel space. Also, Apple might unlock Siri for more devices in 6.x versions.

It's interesting to see Apple support the 3GS for so long. It really is the budget iPhone.

I see some clarification on apple's ios6 page in the sense that the 3gs won't get some features. Why can't they do the same for the iPad 1?

Surprised that the 4 is also missing some features.

Features are subject to change. Not all features are available on all devices.

  1. Some features may not be available in all countries or all areas. Flyover and turn-by-turn navigation will be available only on iPhone 4S and iPad 2 or later. Cellular data charges may apply.
  2. Siri will be available only on iPhone 4S and iPad (3rd generation) and requires Internet access. Siri may not be available in all languages or all areas, and features may vary by area. Cellular data charges may apply.
  3. Shared Photo Streams requires iOS 6 on iPhone 4 or later or iPad 2 or later, or a Mac computer with OS X Mountain Lion. An up-to-date browser is required for accessing shared photo streams on the web.
  4. FaceTime over a cellular network requires iPhone 4S or iPad (3rd generation) with cellular data capability. Carrier data charges may apply. FaceTime is not available in all countries.
  5. VIP list and VIP and Flagged smart mailboxes will be available on iPhone 4 or later and iPad 2 or later.
  6. Offline Reading List will be available on iPhone 4 or later and iPad 2 or later.
  7. Made for iPhone hearing aids require iPhone 4S

Ah I see, the 4 won't be getting navigation for some made-up reason, I really hate how Apple does that.

I know how you feel. I'll be riding the gravy train on my iPhone 4S but I know in a year, I'll probably be out on the next "super cool feature". This is a bad habit that other phone makers seemed to have picked up as well. "Want ICS? Buy a new phone or wait for eternity for your phone to get it."

According to a moderator at ArsTechnica:

From what I understand (from discussions with Apple and MS engineers) is the turn-by-turn patent license is ridiculously expensive, and it's quite understandable to me that Apple would limit that to more recent devices.

Maybe in a similar way, limiting Facetime over cellular to the 4s will limit the load on the cell companies. If they had included it for the 4 owners as well, that would've been too much. An artificial limit, but a limit nonetheless.

Nope. Pretty much what you see during announcement is the finalized list of "features". Beta will only fix bugs and tweak existing features. So there is no chance that Siri will come to anything other than iPad 3 and iPhone 4S.

Also I suspect the next iPhone will run iOS 6.1 or 6.2 by the time it comes out.

Come on now. If you have an iPhone 4, you should be due for an upgrade anyway. My wife has an iPhone 4 and she can't wait for Apple to announce the new iPhone so she can upgrade. The iPhone 4 is a great phone, but after 2 years, it's about time to move on to bigger and better things. Hell, when the new iPhone is released, the 4S should be a pretty cheap upgrade for iPhone 4 owners.
