Is there a way to show that I have an email on the tool bar across the top of the screen (where the bluetooth icon and such are)? I though apple had added that in iOS 5 but I can't find it.

Thanks.

Can't do it in stock form. Apple decided that something to tell you you had any undismissed notifications was unnecessary.

Ah I didn't realize this is what you meant in the other post. This you can't do.

It isn't available in the toolbar but if you swipe your finger down from the top of the screen it brings up your notifications and, thus, your new mail

That seems pretty stupid. If I'm going to swipe my finger anyways, I might as well just hit the mail icon and open it to see if I have a message.

It is if you're just going to look for new mail but not if you're looking for ALL of the new notifications

Just the fact that you have to swipe your finger to get "notified" seems stupid. If it's a notification it should notify you, you shouldn't have to do the work to get notified. Just seems like a half-assed approach to something every other smart phone already does.

I have an iPhone 4, upgraded to ios 5. There is an email notification just under the main top tool bar. It appears as a thin band, indicating an email has been received. It looks like a header for a few seconds. It seems to pop up regardless of what app you are using. However, there doesn't seem to be a way to change its behavior.

It does notify you with a popup when an update occurs. If you go notifications in Settings you can modify (on an app by app basis) whether you want a banner (what Sailidawg described), an alert (shows up in the middle of your screen) or no notification popup at all
