I currently use a pair of AirPods 2 and a pair of AirPods Pro. I also have an iPhone and an iPad that I use with them. (Albeit, the AirPods 2 are mostly dedicated to being travel headphones that I leave in my car and use with my iPhone.) After I added in my iPad a few months ago, I found out the hard way that swapping AirPods between two Apple devices wasn't always a very clean process. I had instances where selecting the AirPods on the other device would just fail, and I'd have to try again. I also had other instances where only a single earbud would connect, which in one instance, I had to reboot my phone to get it to connect properly. This doesn't even include how sometimes even when they are connected, the sound may randomly begin to garble for a few seconds, or simply drop out. (If it's the latter, I may have to go back and hit Play to resume playback.)
With all of the aforementioned woes, I was looking forward to how iOS 14 was slated to offer better connectivity with the AirPods between devices, but honestly... I don't see it. Sure, I see the notification at the top stating that the AirPods are connected, but outside of that, they still don't swap between devices. (Yes, I have the latest firmware on my AirPods Pro.) What's worse is that connection notification doesn't just show when the AirPods connect, but it shows up quite often after they've already connected. Ultimately, in my experience the AirPods still just connect to the last device that they were connected to as long as its in range. For example, I used my AirPods Pro with my iPad last night, and when I went to mow the lawn today, I was going to use them with my phone. I figured they had connected to my phone, but no... I had to go back into the sound menu and select the AirPods, which is the exact same action that was required on iOS 13.
Is anyone else having any better luck with the AirPods and the new connectivity feature? I'm not sure if I'm just dealing with a messed up iPhone, because my iOS install does seem to be showing some really awkward signs... like how the Storage breakdown reports that I have 13 PB of Health data, and how I can't remove my old Apple Watch to allow me to pair my new one. I wonder if it's some weird bug because I wanted to wait to update my old Apple Watch (to WatchOS 7) in case the new one came on an older version of WatchOS. So, I've been using WatchOS 6 with iOS 14, and I do use the Workouts app on my Apple Watch. (In the past, I've run into some awkward setup situations when a new iPhone was on an older version of iOS.)
