People say the Sharper Image Ionic Breeze air purifier is harmful and produces too much ozone. Seems many of the hair dryers in stores now are ionic and it's harder to find a well built one that isn't. Are they bad too, or is it doing something different?

No, they are used two different ways. One "attracts" particles and burns them off. The other is supposed to just do an "ionic exchange" to get rid of static cling. It wa sorigonallt intended to be used to dry hair faster, but there have been no backed upclaims of that yet.
