Ion or GN40 coming soon?

I want a netbook and its primary purpose in life is going to be movie playback, so obviouly I have a pretty high interest in these. Considering Intel and Nvidia are currently arguing in court I am not holding my breath for Ion anytime soon but how about GN40? I know it was axed at the last minute from the 1000HE so maybe it will be in something soon?

Netbook screens aren't big enough nor high enough resolution to take advantage of HD video, so as long as you avoid high bitrate h264 streams (that would have to downscale itself anyways), you should be okay on any average netbook.

The implication there is that you could connect it to a HDTV, hopefully through DVI or HDMI, and use it like a portable (and cheap) HTPC.

I want to play HD video so I don't have to re-encode anything. I just want to grab what I want off my server and go, not plan out and re-encode stuff. I know it can display it but to me it just seems that it would be a huge waste of power to re-encode something to watch once. Of course a higher resolution screen would be welcome. 1080P would be overkill for a 10" screen but 720P would be nice.

ion would also be nice if you want to play some older game that needs 3D, like Morrowind, Neverwinter Nights 1, older shooters, etc.

I'd go with the ion. There seems to be pretty solid support for hardware acceleration of .mkvs on newer nvidia chipsets as long as you use media player classic, I'd bet you can decode the 1080p stream on it just fine.
