I have just recently received an Iomega (rebagged plextor) and have a few questions for you experts out there. I was wondering what the advantages are of changing the name string to plextor and upgrading the firmware to the latest plextor firmware was. Also, what would be the best burning software if I leave it as an Iomega and what would be the best if I change it to plextor? I'm leaning towards Nero. Any advice would be gladly accepted. Thanks.

Nero is great but IMO if you're a newbie then adaptec easy creator is the better first choice!
I'll leave others to advise you of the firmware merits!

Not really a newbie, I had a TDK VeloCD 8x4x32 before this and was using the Adaptec software but before that I had an Acer CDRW that came with Nero and I really liked it for some reason, seemed really user friendly. Thanks for the input.

I got a new 12X Plextor about a month ago and am still using an older 8X Plextor that was bought under Digital Research brand and haven't needed to update anything. I get no coasters and I'm not screwing with it. If it ain't broke don't try to fix it! Both of mine will stay as they are unless problems arise. I did ditch the Adaptec software on both in favor of Nero, which I like much better.

In answer to your other question of what advantage is there to changing the ID string to Plexor and making the upgrade now -- which I did with my Iomega/Plexor -- the advantage of the present upgrade as I understand it is to increase the DAE from 24x to 32x or thereabouts. The main advantage though is longterm in that future upgrades that appear on the Plexor site can be made to your renamed Iomega but not to the Iomega until -- and if -- Iomega chooses to post a version for their burners.

I am putting a TDK 12x/10x/24x -- which I got in a price match for the same price as the CompUSA Iomega -- in my other machine and probably will not make the name change on it since TDK is supposed to be much better about making firmware for upgrades available. I did archive the software for the name change just in case though.

Here's a Link to a sight that has a Firmware that doesn't change the ID string on the Iomega but updates it to Plextor's latest 1.07 fimware features without losing your Iomega warranty (maybe) Firmware Page Thats what I did to my Iomega and it works great.

Thanks for all the input guys. I assume most of you like the Nero better than the Adaptec no matter if I leave the drive as an Iomega or change it?
