Iomega 12x10x32 hangs in middle of burns

My rebadged plextor hangs in the middle of burns and causes the system to be unable to shutdown, regardless of burn speed or type. It works with UDMA off, but I'd much prefer to have udma. It reads cds fine. A while ago, the cd writer made a huge thump while reading a cd so I suspect the drive is damaged. Any suggestions?

I get the same thing when I overclock my cpu(p3). If I run it at stock speed, or just a little higher, it runs fine. But when I put about a 15% OC on it, which is stable in ALL programs, it usually causes the Adaptec CD Creator to hang.

Been thinking of trying Nero, I hear it isn't nearly as sensitive to out of spec bus speeds and OC'd chips as Adaptec's program.

Not sure if this will help you, but try running your chip at default speed if it's OC'd.

Does it regardless of if the system is overclocked or not. Regardless of OS also, in both NT4 and win2k.

Heres something weird you could try. Do you have a DVD drive in your system also? I do, and if there is a disk in it my Plextor 12x10x32s will not finish a burn. If I take out the disk in the dvd, it will work. The funny thing is, The burner is scsi and the dvd drive is ide. Just food for thought.

How is your hardware set up? Are they on the same channel or separate? Masters or slaves? I just fixed a similar issue by changing my hardware setup.

The cd writer is on it's own channel as master.

<< you answered your own question: turn dma off. >>

Must I do this? I really don't want to.

edit: just checked iomega's page and they seem to actively encourage using DMA on their CD writers

I switched my hardware setup to HD master, IDE0 and DVD-ROM master, CD-RW, slave on IDE1 and the problem was gone.

No virus checker. It used to write fine with DMA on before that giant thump it made. I hate RMAs, but looks like I'll be calling iomega tommorrow.
